Have hunted for 20 years and never been on a hunt where a band was killed. I have a buddy that hunts once every few years and has 3 or 4 bands.

He went crane hunting once last year, on his birthday and with a brand new shotgun. Shot one crane and it was banded back in 2005 I believe.

Some people are just lucky man. Im 23 and have killed 4 bands in my life. I have been on hunts where others have been killed. We kill on average 350-450 ducks a year. Our best year we killed 628. I guess i would call myself lucky considering i have more than other people i know that are my age.

You could kill 2000 ducks with no bands or 100 ducks with 3 bands. Its all about luck. The further you move north the better chance of killing a band you have.

1 Bluewing Teal. One year old bird banded in Canada, killed in St. Charles Parish. It was the last bird of our two man limit that morning.

2 mallard drakes.
First one was banded in South Dakota, hatched in 2017, killed opening weekend of 2017.

Second one, I was the only one to shoot at a greenhead trying to get out and watched where he fell and the dog pick him up. Younger guy that was hunting with us got all excited when he saw the band, so I said I was pretty sure that was the one he killed.

Funny that this thread came up. I got a new lanyard for Christmas and was switching my bands over to it the other day and it got me thinking about each one:

My first band ever was a drake Woodrow killed up on the Ouachita River near Walls Lake when I was 15. I think it was banded in Kentucky.

Did not kill another band until I was in college around 1992. Killed a Mallard drake on some lake outside of Ferriday. Can't remember where it was banded. I think in Canada.

Was in on another band on a Mallard drake about 2000-ish that I won on rock paper scissors against another guy that shot at the same bird in a pit in Start. Banded in Alberta.

Killed a Snow with neck band and foot band out at Woodsland on 15 East of Monroe. It was an actual flying shot and not done on a creep either. Banded up in Baffin Bay area.

Long drought after that but then hit 5 in a row. Banded BW Teal killed in Winnie, TX in 2016. Banded in Krotz Springs, LA???? Would have never pegged that one.

Pintail drake killed in Anahuac, TX in 2017. Banded in Canada. Saskatchewan.

GW Teal drake killed in Pierce, TX in 2018. Banded in Minnesota.

Wood Duck drake killed in Navasota river bottoms near College Station, TX also in 2018. I can't remember where it was banded.

Mottled Duck hen killed in Anahuac, TX in 2019. Banded in Anahuac NWR.

The blue wing teal i killed was also banded in Krotz Springs. I wonder if they were banded together.

I would have to get my certificate to see when it was banded.

Double banded mallard in Oklahoma. Bird was 13 years old banded in Saskatchawan. When I called the reward band in, they would not pay it becuase it was past the 10 year study period. He looked like an immature drake, tiny duck.

Widgeon in Okalhoma this year. Didn't get to keep it. Sat in with a guide who didn't charge us. He wasn't happy about something said prior to the hunt, so I just left it alone. Apparenty they killed another banded widgeon same day previous year in the same field.

Love these stories. Keep em' coming baws.

That bugged me that a teal would jump out of a Flyway since I would have thought that area would be out of place for a duck shot in Winnie which is Central Flyway to be banded in Mississippi Flyway but I understand that Krotz Springs is a big banding area for BW Teal so I guess it is not unusual.

Been duck hunting since around 1987 or 1988. Hunted hard many of those years including belonging to a couple of clubs in AR for several years.

Never killed one with a band and I can't remember being on a hunt with one killed.

Heck, it took me 20yrs to get my first pintail. My son's very 1st duck he ever killed was a pintail a few weeks ago. It's at the taxidermist getting mounted now.

When I moved back to Ontario after 11 yrs in LA I was hunting a public marsh, next blind over shot a swan (dumbasses - no season and illegal in Ont - who cant identify a swan) ... swan was hit but made it to my spread. It had leg and neck band ... I was tempted but let it swim away.

Buddy I hunt with has shot two Jack Miner banded birds here in Alabama. They are pretty sought after. That was back in the 90’s.

Heres a cool story to add. My buddy just sent me a picture of his youngest dog holding a banded wood duck hen.

It was his dogs first hunt and first ever retrieve. How cool.
