I like the split, let's me catch up with my lady friends.

Oh Papa wasn't hunting out of season, but Dolly Lama was one tired dog at the end of the day.

local vernacular

I wouldnt say calling a pintail a "sprig" is local by any means BP, I've heard people from South Dakota, Illinois, and Arkansas refer to them by that name.

Take it easy on BP, he had summer mallards, cans, blackjacks, squealers and baldplates too.

I usually don't begin hunting until December these days since we really don't start killing birds until the mallards start moving, so the split does help out with the wife and kids. This front today slammed the Dakotas and upper midwest pretty hard with snow and cold so we should start picking up some birds now.

Drove up to a spot to deer hunt at NWR that has no open season on that particular lake at all. Two guys having post hunt lunch with two nice limits of ducks displayed on their tailgate. I bet they thought they really found something.

I'm gonna guess gw teal, canvas backs, black ducks, woodies, and widgeon? I have never heard any of those names either. Been duck hunting east TX for only 6 yrs but everyone I have hunted with uses the common names with maybe abbreviating to woodies, or gaddys.

Summers = mottled duck

cans = canvasback

blackjacks/cop cars = do'gris (scaup)

squealers = whistling ducks

Not sure what a bald plate is though thats a new one.

Oh and Vol, glad you didn't do any damage to it. After the first two inches of poonanny it's like virgin territory.

Never heard a wood duck called a whistling duck...would think a pintail might be called whistler before a squealer would be.
