What is an acceptable number of hours on a used motor? What would be considered high?

I was always told that every 100hrs on and outboard was equal to 10k miles to a car. So 300hrs=30k mi and so on. Dont know how true this is tho.

Plenty of regularly used motors go to 3000 hours if maintained well. Key word is regularly used. If theres a 10yr old boat with 50 hours, that's a situation to be wary of

I’d worry less about the hours and more about compression, indication of discolored or burned paint on the upper block behind the flywheel or the head, condition of fuel lines, water pump operation, etc.

Have your own mechanic look over it really good before buying. If the seller refuses to let you do that, no sale.

Also draining a little LU to see if it's milky or if the plug has metal on it.

I didn't get stuff really checked out as pillage suggested and got burned on a boat I just bought.

Age of motor? These motors now I’m not worried at all about hours. As a previous poster stated it’s all about compression etc.. The new motors now can be plugged in at a dealer, and they can tell you how it was treated, avg mph, avg rpm etc.. I’ve seen motors with 2-3k hours on them still going strong.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Really do appreciate it. Anyone have any type of experience with Blue Wave Boats?
