Ever since the freeze last week, my wife's hot water faucet only had about half of the flow as before. I took off the aerator from the spout and cleaned it but didn't help much.

They are widespread faucets like this.

I assume it's a ball valve in the knobs since it only turns 90°, so I doubted it could be clogged there. So I unhooked the line from the shut off valve under sink where it connects to the knob line and opened the shut off valve into a bucket. Full pressure there. I then unhooked the outflow line from the knob and opened the knob. Low water pressure. So I removed the whole knob out of the vanity and ran water through the outflow side, and a bunch of lime scale washed back through it. Blew through it and washed it a couple more times, hooked it back up and it's back to normal.

Question is, how the hell can lime scale clog up a ball valve?

And maybe this can help a few of you baws that are having trouble with your faucets.

If you have a tank water heater, it may be a sign that you need to flush it out as there is a bunch of sediment and crap in the bottom.

Good idea to flush that out quarterly, or at least semi-annually. Extends the life of your water heater too.

This happened to us after the freeze as well. Not clogging but noticeable sediment and water heater making noise due to sediment popping as it was heating the water. Flushed the water heater.

And this may have been a dumb thing, but we installed a water softening system. We had just bought a washer and dryer and they pitched the softener system to us. Timing of the hard water issues made us pull the trigger. hoping it reduces and even helps reverse some of that calcium damage.
