That's what I was going to do but you said 4x4 up in a previous post. I didn't want to tell you that the 4x4 is the reason your gate could be sagging.

So use metal at the double gate instead of a 4x4?

The middle 4x4 is in a vinyl post sleeve concreted in the ground. I can just remove the 4x4 and bolt to open fully otherwise I just use the 4'.

How does the 4x4 slide? I was going to do the same thing sorta but have a sleeve in the ground and something that slides attaching to the gate. Not a typical metal bar but something a little bigger than won't wiggle.

I do love that pedestrian gate that converts into a double full gate. I'm bookmarking that pic

But the post is attached to the gate. Which is attached to the fence. Do you just remove the hinges?

The gate is mounted on the removable 4x4 with an 8" carriage bolt going through the entire 4x4. It is secured with a wing nut. I just remove the carriage bolt and lift the 4x4.

I am replacing about 150 feet of 6-ft tall treated pine fence and materials are about $1300. I am doing the demolition and construction myself...will take about 7-8 full days (I am about a third done). I would skip the concrete. Studies indicate it speeds up rotting. Dig hole about 2 3/4 ft deep and put 3-4 inches of river rock in bottom, set 4x4, add another 3-4 inches river rock (aids with drainage) then back fill with dirt. Have "fun."

I would like to see a study on this. I'm not calling you out, just curious. I can see quicker rot if concrete is placed in the hole first not allowing the water to drain.

2 suggestions.

1 get one of those post hole diggers attached to the small bibcat that you stand up in and drive around....... it was right at diuble what I would have paid for a 2 man.

Put limestone or pea gravel 4" deep minimum at the bottom of your holes.

Thanks Hu, this is a huge help. How long is that sleeve?

Also I'm getting a standing auger. It's the same price to rent as a 2 man. It has wheels and stuff
