he duck hunts more than anything during winter but bass fishes a lot during spring and duck season is winding down so i was thinking maybe a fishing gift. He has a decent rod and reel but could probably use another.

Basspro/Cabelas gift card for $300 (or whatever major outdoor retailer is in your area). I always enjoy getting gift cards more because I can go pick out things I actually need.

Probably the best answer. Im so damn particular there is no way that someone could pick out what I would buy.

Agreed. Unless it's something that I've specifically asked for, I don't think anybody has every gotten me a hunting or fishing gift that was exactly what I would have bought. I'm pretty picky though.

Everyone, regardless of age or equipment owned, could use another rod and reel.

??

Seriously? That's not an 18 yr old gift. That's more like a baby shower gift.

OP -- there are some good quality knives in the $300 range.
