Got an Echo Pure Meat for my birthday. First call I've ever had. I've watched every YouTube video and read every website. I can't get a basic quack. Everyone says "blow like you're trying to fog up a mirror", "use your diaphragm", "blow from your gut". When I do that it sounds the same as me just blowing with my cheeks. I've tried grunting, talking, humming, coughing, etc. Can someone truly break it down to a 5 year olds level for me? Beside "blow with your diaphragm" because obviously I've missed something.

I blow it every day going to and from work. Mine sounds more like "wwwhhyyyaaaa" than "quack"

You're blowing Pure Meat? This is a joke by the manufacturer, right?

Different things click for different people. First, it might not come over night or even in a week. Put the call down, and pick it up tomorrow. Pick it back up find a new video to watch and try to do what they are demonstrating. It's hard to explain, but the thing that sparked it for me was when I heard someone use the phrase, make a noise similar to how you would say HUT as a quarterback. The air is gonna come from deep down and be "hot". I make a grunting noise as I blow, and my quacks are pretty solid.

You're gonna get tons of different advice. There's no sure fire technique, some things will make it click for some people. Keep at it, don't get discouraged.

Keep at it man is alll I can say, for me I definitely had a moment after a lot of practice where it suddenly "clicked" for me. It's easy to get discouraged until that point though.

Everyone is different but this is what made it click for me:

anchor the tip of your tongue on the back of your bottom teeth, now take middle of tongue and put it on roof of mouth. Should be easy to hold that position.

Get some air pressure built up and use the middle of tongue against roof of mouth as a valve, open it and a burst of air should come through, then close it. Repeat.

This should get the short burst "quack!" to build off of.

Is that a single reed? If not, I'd suggest getting one as they're harder to learn on (much more versatile) and it will payoff.

Agree on practicing whenever you're driving, you'll learn by the end of the summer at the longest.

The hot air tip helped me improve as I have a lot of spit and also dip.

Another tip is to lift your tongue and breath in to dry your mouth before calling.

For basic quack, try "saying" hut or ten. Once you get that everything will build off of it.

If you know someone near you that's proficient, try to practice with them and let them make sure your call is tuned properly.

It turns into a joke because it's Phil Robertson and Duck Commander (which is sad, becauss those guys really know what they are talking about), but this isn't terrible advice.

Use a simple word like "Ten". Even Dud Faulk, on his "How To" tapes/CDs, taught to use a word to understand the proper breathing technique for blowing a duck call.

I don't say "Ten" into a duck call anymore, haven't in years, but the breathing is the same.

And don't believe all those bullshite "feed calls" you will hear online or at competitions. No duck sounds like a machine gun.

Every call blows differently too. Some are easier to learn on than others in my opinion. Try some other calls. Double reed calls are easier to learn (more forgiving) on as well.

Turn the call around and bow into the end of the insert.

Listen to how the quack sounds when you blow into the end of the insert. It should only be a short note.

Hut like a qb would for your quacks. Use kick in the back of your throat and rotate with a tick with tongue on roof of your mouth for a little feeding noise. The ongoing feed call I don't use nor can I do worth a hoot. No duck does that anyways. I always kept a call in my truck and probably still have the rnt cd in there somewhere.

There is no easier call to blow at first than a double nasty. Get one from academy. Best 19.99 you'll buy, will come with a instructional cd, which you need anyways.

Buy the Art of Commanding Ducks DVD by Phil Robertson. Once you have that down, find some real Mallards to listen too. You will quickly discover that real hens don't hit 20 note hail calls or do non-stop feeding chuckles. You rarely hear a hen Mallard let out more than 5 or 6 notes.

Those echos are tricky for me. I'd suggest a Haydel dr 85 or a Yentzen, they'll both kill ducks and are way easier to operate that that single reed.

I've never tried blowing Pure Meat, but some calls just take a lot more air to blow than others. Particularly for someone just starting to learn, it's tough to get the hang of it with a less forgiving call. Try holding a little back pressure on the call with the cup of your hand. If you just don't have any luck, take their advice and try a different call to see if it comes easier.

calling takes a hell of a lot of practice...I have been hunting for decades and I still have to take my calls out a week or so before the season to get tuned up. best thing to do is put them in your vehicle and blow them all the way to work/school each day.

as you say, you have to grunt into the call to make it sound right. I find that the hardest part is crisply starting and stopping each individual quack...you have to use your tongue really forcefully for it to be crisp.

also, most of the "quack" sound comes from varying how much your hand is opened on the downstream side. start with your fist almost closed and open it through the quack...basically gotta do the same thing with you hand as you do with your lips when you say the word "quack".

honestly, if you can get around someone who can call, they can show you all of this in a half hour or so.

That's a tough call to learn on. Its made to have a lot of squeal and whine to it and is for a experienced caller. Go buy a Haydel double reed until you learn all the basics and can sound like a duck. Then start using your Echo
