How do they normally react when hit in the gut?

Bow or gun?
Sometimes they arch their back(hunch up)and walk off instead of bolting. Usually stinks around the site they were shot. I would back out and give them plenty of time to die. If any blood is found it's usually watery. Get a dog out there asap if you think that's what happened. If no dog is available, look around for nearby water. Keep smelling as you're tracking for blood. I have only gut shot once with a rifle and this was how it went down. It will die if it's gut shot and you don't push it miles away from where you shot it.

Jumped and arched his back when I shot. No blood but I didn't want to push so I backed out.

This may not be much help, but my son gut shot one once. The only reason we knew was bc I was videoing it. The deer jumped and ran off. We saw it run down the road and were able to follow his tracks. I didn't find the first drop of blood for at least 100 yards. Then the blood was sparse. I went and got a tracking dog but never found the deer.

It was heartbreaking. Hopefully you do better than we did.

I gut shot a deer one time when I was about 17 years old. I knew right away that it was gut shot because it's intestines were dangling almost to the ground. Waited about 2 hours before going track it down. There was so much blood that it was impossible to miss the trail. About 150 yards later the blood trail started thinning. Then it just disappeared. We never found the deer. I'm convinced it was a terminator from the future.

Never.

Unless in swamp, then maybe. But probably not.

We always do. I usually wait maybe 20 minutes and start cleaning. Just leave the guts in the woods someplace.

Lots of clubs like ours want a live weight on the deer for planting purposes.
