Mother in law gave me this savage arms 12 guage from her father. It doesn't eject shells properly even after a good cleaning. Firing pin malfunctions. Other than that I love this gun. How much you think it would cost to get in good working order again? Worth it?

This cheap shells will eject poorly out of any shotgun

Eta: I would at least look into repair if it isn't a shell problem. Looks like some nice engraving, and if it's old that's prolly hand engraved

Thoughts on Jim's firearms on Siegen? Just saw they do gunsmithing and it's about 100 yards from my office.

Jim's is good people. Never used them for gun smithing but they are very knowledgable when purchasing

Eta: brig it in and see. I'd be willing to pay up to $500 if it was mine just because I love engraved shotguns and try to collect as many firearms in good working condition as I can

Cool. I'll bring it have them take a look. Any ideas how much I could expect to pay?

I also have some other really old 12 gauges. It's a crying shame. They're all rusted out but Id love to get them restored. Ones a single-shot lever action crack barrel and the other is a bolt action with a clip, which I've never seen. Cool to have in the collection.

Cost wise I really don't know. I'd google gun smithing and find some average prices on the firing pin work.

I've got a few like that, an old rem 1100, a crack barrel 20, and a really nice .22 that are all rusted up. I plan on taking one a year and getting them redone. Spread out the cost a little.

That bolt action looks really cool.

Sometimes they'll tell you not to. Friend of mine brought in a belgium made sweet 16 to get the wood redone. Gunsmith wouldn't touch it, said it was worth too much original

is it opposite day?

And as far as gunsmithing goes if I recall correctly people in the know do not take their guns there. Ask around on BayouShooter.com, they'll recommend a good guy and can probably give you a better idea on cost as well.

So, are you saying that is doesn't eject shells AND it has a firing pin problem or do you think the reason it doesn't eject shells is because the firing pin doesn't work properly?

Well, anyway, no worries. The failure to eject is an easy fix and won't require a gunsmith.

That gun is an iteration of the various Savage copies of the Browing Auto-5. In this instance they just rounded the hump a little and covered it with the funcky stock. As a copy of the Auto-5 it will have friction rings on the magazine tube that must be set differently for heavy and light loads. The rings are probably set wrong.

Just google up the correct way to set the friction rings on an Auto-5, remove your forend, set the rings the way you are supposed to, and take it out and shoot it.

Same here. Even if it is too much to get into working condition, I'd put it above my fireplace or on display in my office. .

Get them all fixed and in firing condition, but try to leave them original. Some nice family heirlooms you can pass down.

It isn't broken. The friction rings are just adjusted wrongly.

Well both really. I cleaned it up pretty good and the ejecting got better not 100% though. Now the firing pin just barely dents the shell. I can pull the trigger twice and it will sometimes fire. Just don't like messing with half fired shells. You guys have convinced me. Gonna take them all in after the season. Thanks for the help.
