Ugh...I'm so conflicted now.

It really does seem to be that the majority of people prefer the charcoal grills to gas, and it now has me leaning towards just going with a simple weber kettle and charcoal starter.

After looking into this some more I've come across smoker boxes for gas grills. I didn't realize these even existed. Anybody have any experience with these, and would they make a gas grill more comparable to a charcoal grill taste wise?

Regardless, thank you all for the suggestions. I may have analysis paralysis, but all of your comments are appreciated.

A cheap Chimney start is all you need. I keep mine stored on the bottom of my weber on the triangle wire shelf. Mine is the 26 inch performer. I love the ash catcher as well.

Nothing I've ever seen accomplishes that. My dad had the old Lava rock things back in the 90s. I think they call them flavor bars now. They're just a place for fat drippings to burn without causing flare ups by hitting the gas burners. But I guess a metal box you put wood chips in could give you some flavor. Seems like a lot of trouble when you could just get a kettle and be done with it.

Just spend the money and get one of the cheaper weber gassers. Worth it.

Anybody ever use one of the Oklahoma Joe combo grill/smokers? Saw one yesterday when looking at mine.

Yes, they are ok. I don't own it. It's a good friends. He wishes he would of just got a really nice gasser and a decent smoker separate.

Most of the cheap gas grills rust out in 3 to 5 years.

If you're going with gas, spend the extra bucks and buy quality, OR you can just put that extra money aside and buy replacement parts in about 3 years.

I've always wondered if the Weber gas grills hold up longer than the $200 to $400 ones.

I've had my Weber gas grill for over 8 years, and it stays outside in the weather.

Been using a Chargriller Pro with side fire box for over 8yrs and highly recommend. Can both grill and smoke on it, has really held up well, I love the cast iron grates and ability to raise the charcoal pan (but a cover). Also get a charcoal chimney, I'll never have a gas grill. Must say I love the OB cause I didn't realize CG made the akorn, may have to get me a second grill.

also meant to ask, once i decide on a grill, any stores that typically sell grills already assembled without charging for assembly? not a problem putting one together, but if someone else does it for free i'll take it.

I think Lowes or Home Depot do. At least one of them used to. My big char grilled duo was a gift from my mother in law and she had it delivered. When they came in the delivery truck it was already assembled and they sat it in place.

Char Broil Infared 2 burner LP grill

I have had this one going on 8 years and has served me well. I have changed the grates out twice, last time I switched to the cast iron grates and it has been a great little grill. It is starting to show its age and I will be having to replace it soon, but for the price range you are looking at, I would recommend it.

When it comes down to it its what makes You happy for every grill on the market there are folks that like it or they would go out of business. kinda seems like ole guys who love sitting around cooking and drinking lean towards charcoal its kinda ole fashoned and slow and comfortable. The young agressive types prefer gas they aint worried about standing by the pit just wand to throw frozen burgers po for the kids and be done fore the game starts or half time is over. to me gas verses charcoal is like apples and oranges it pends on what ya like to do.

Weber kettle with chimney starter. Excellent grill. If you want gas eventually, save up for a Genesis.

The kettle is so versatile. I've cooked pizzas and smoked meats on it.
