Finally have a weekend off and have the chance to make the trip down to the island. If I go down, I plan on fishing off the pier at night and fishing the surf sunday morning. However, after looking at the weather, it's looking like a 50% chance of scattered thunderstorms. Should I still try and make the trip down? (It's a 3 hour drive...)

If you let a 50% chance of rain stop you from fishing you mind as well give it up in South La..

You will be surf fishing who cares if it rains that would actually be a relief...

Summer thunderstorms are common and are not a big deal when fishing that area. Usually you can see them coming and pass pretty quickly.

As long as the wind forecast isn't too bad you should be good to go.

The forecast for Gulf Shores when I went down there for a week was 70-90% the whole week. Went anyway and it rained one afternoon. Couple of times during the night and early AM. The top of my feet are still peeling

Find some of my best surf fishing trips are right before and after thunderstorm rolls through. I'd take the chance and go. Heard to many people catching fish right now down there not to go.

I don't know about after a thunderstorm, but fishing right before a front when the barometric pressure is low as hell you can usually get on the fish.

ETA: I find it has more of an effect during the winter months though.

The fish are there, just bounce around till you find them. If you see a bunch of mullet trolling the beach the trout are under them.

I'll be down there next weekend. First trip to the island in a good while. My uncle practically lives at his camp now that he's retired and says he knows all the spots. Aughta be a good one!

Me and jimjackjose are taking the ladies to catch some trout down there Saturday. I've had several good trips in the last couple weeks there! Like they said trout are on the beach.. good tide and low winds should make it a great day.
