grabbing a leader while offshore fishing

I watch quite a few salt water fishing shows. I don't ever get to bluewater fish for marlin, sails, etc. but it seems that there is always a jackass host or mate that grabs the leader before the fish is ready to come in. What the frick is the advantage? They always act surprised when the fish thrashes around and bangs against the boat and the line breaks.......usually followed by the phrase, " perfect release"
So I guess my question is am I missing something? What advantage do these clowns have over wearing the fish down and taking the hook out then reviving the fish for release rather than getting their arse and the boat beat the hell up?

Once you grab the leader it's a caught fish

I was always told never to grab the leader ever no matter what we were fishing for.

Not on offshore.

Me too.....I guess I understand the caught fish aspect but that seems like a risk of injury for a fish or yourself if they aren't ready yet.

In a tournament if one of the mates grabs the leader and quickly it's a caught fish and you can get baits back out fast.
Can be the difference in a million or nothing.

That makes sense to me if its a tournament.......but I'm more talking about the guys on TV.
The one I watched yesterday was a guy named bill Boyce I believe in IGFA Digest. He was a leader grabbing fool, and they were just out fishing for the day.
It reminds me of that drunk friend you take fishing that is terrible with a net or a gaff

As others have said, grabbing the leader means a caught fish. Keep in mind that the leader is often 300 lbs plus, so the chances of it breaking are slim. The problem comes in when mates wrap incorrectly. The proper way to wrap is to do so that when the fish makes a run, you can release the leader without it cinching on your hand and pulling you over.
I used to practice my wraps often to make sure that I didn't get pulled in on larger marlin. It can be very dangerous.

This. Had a buddy go for a swim one time. Scared the crap out of everyone on board.

yeah i'm a one wrap dude. I ain't scared to dump it. Most fish around 2-300 come in pretty quickly on an 80, and will be really pissed and mean. The bigger gals usually just come up easily and sluggish. Keep in mind i aint wired many big ones. We fish lures and most fish in the gulf we catch are around 2-300lbs.

Exactly. Grabbing the leader is a caught fish whether it is for a tournament or just for fun. Nothing wrong with safely grabbing the leader. I personally am not going to wrap up in it. Sometimes it's necessary to get the fish in the right position to gaff.
