Can't go wrong with this rifle...get a nice Leupold scope to go along with it 2x7 or 3x9.

Go with 270, 308, or 3006...you'll always be able to find ammo where ever you hunt.

$350 for the remington 700 and spending like $300 to $400 for the scope seems like the best deal so far

I have a Winchester Model 70 7mm-08. Sub MOA out of the box, flat shooting - less than 2 inch drop at 200 yards (sighted in at 100) $600 Gallery of guns. Game Reaper mount $400 Nikon Monarch 3X12 42sf.

Or a Remington 700 .270. Great gun. Throw a leupold vari xIII and you got a deer rifle.

I shoot a Browning A- Bolt, but I've always heard good things about the Rem. 700. I'd like to try the XCR version of it. They also have a 700 chambered in .257 weatherby that would be a good buy. Great cartridge in a cheaper housing type of thing...

Your original idea of a Tikka and Zeiss Conquest for $1000 is about as good as it gets. If you are willing to spend the $1000, you will not regret it. As for caliber, again your original idea of 270 Win is perfect. Fairly light recoil, flat shooting, excellent deer caliber, ammo available everywhere.

Remington 700 in.270. Leupold or zeiss, either way.

Not sure I understand the .243 in fields and .270 in the woods comment earlier.

30-30 fo first rifle. Then from there one day pick up a bolt action of choice. 30-30 can do many a things. from zombie gun to being one of the best deer rifles of all time. Something that will last a lifetime and cost just over 300 bucks.

Yes, Marlin is a must. This is a rifle everyone should have in a collection.

30-30 for first rifle

I gotta agree with Crawdaddy. A 30-30 was my first rifle and what I killed my first deer with. It is very versatile and you can throw a scope on it (just make sure you get a Marlin, not the Winchester b/c they eject the shells out of the top and screws up the scope mount). I still love to shoot that gun and will give it to my kid one day as his first rifle.

I could be wrong but I've always heard that a .243 will shoot flatter in longer distances than a .270, just not as much knockdown power. Like I said, I could be wrong and would like to know the truth. But I've killed deer right at 300 yds with my .243 and only had them run 25 yds

That's what I would think too. You could check the ballistics, or just know that it obviously works for you since you've killed deer that way for a while...

It will. Bullet placement, good optics, knowing your rifle and SQUEEZING the trigger is the key.

SQUEEZING the trigger

Used to be my biggest problem. I've found that times where I thought I was too relaxed and made a bad shot, I would actually be dead on. But thanks for clearing up the .243 vs. .270 issue. It has always worked well for me, but I'm sure the .270 would just as good. I like having that little .243 though.
