I want to take the my boys,11 and 5, on a speck/red charter trip when it cools down. They both love to fish but if course the 5 yr old needs a little assistance. I live about 45 minutes north of Hammond and thought a trip out of Slidell wouldn't be a bad drive . Any suggestions on who to go with? I'm more interested in them catching fish than a wall hanger.

The best Saltwater guide I've ever been with is Captain Jody Donewar out of empire. Great guide and truly has a passion for fishing and customer service. His deckhand Heather is freakin awesome! I highly recommend them for anyone looking to catch fish and enjoy a good time on the water.

Mike Gallo, Bubby Lamy, and Eric Dumas are all top notch, family friendly captains out of Slidell.

Travis Miller with Miller time charters. He's a friendly arse dude and he'll put y'all on some fish.
Went with him a few weeks ago. He takes kids out pretty often too and slams em. He's out of dularge.

I've heard good things about Gallo and I fished with Dumas 6 or 7 years ago. We didn't catch much but it wasn't for lack of effort.

If you are wanting to be taught how to do something, based on my firsthand experience, I could not recommend the last guide. A lot of people recommend him, but I cannot. If you catch over 75% of the fish and are unwilling after being asked repeatedly to show your clients how to do something or what they are doing wrong- that's a problem. He was running the trolling motor and had first opportunity at every fish (lake p pilings) and didn't turn around to observe and tell any of us what we were doing wrong.

Interesting. I've never been on a guided inshore trip. Is it normal for the guide to catch fish on these trips? I went on an offshore guided trip and the guide only gave instruction. We (the customers) did all the fishing.

On the trips I have been on with Captain Gallo, he would occasionally throw artificial bait, while we fished with live bait...but most of the time he would be devoted to us fishing.

Mark Munson out of Shell Beach is top notch. Mark fishes his arse off for the customers and seems to focus more on trout than any other fish.

I'm also partial to Cap't Charlie with Bayou Charters out of Hopedale. I fish with Charlie a couple of times a year through work functions and would send anyone to him, any day. They always limit out on reds and drum in the marsh if the winds don't allow a bat run for trout.

Dumas is also a good choice. I'd fish with Cap't Eric any day of the week.

Another option is Chris Robert. I've caught some damn fine fish with Chris.

I'd second going with captain Charlie.....you'll learn a ton from him if you pay attention. I've fished with him several times (even went bass fishing with him when he first started guiding) and never had a bad experience.

Only met Capt. Charlie once . First class person, first class lodge and guide service. Josey and dozen of his buddies had trip booked with him Oct. of 13 . Week before trip Josey learned that instead of cured only had few months left.He told that dozen nobody better cancel and they all showed. He added me to invite list. Will always treasure that weekend. Wasn't prepared for cold and rain in Oct. Capt. Charlie gave me his slicker suit when headed out at dayllght with one of his guides, Josey, 4 LSU2 and Choirboy. Lot of fish caught one last time.

I remember seeing the pictures of that trip here . I'm glad you have that good memory with your son . I lost my best friend (dad) 5 years ago and miss him dearly. I want to make some special memories with my boys like he did with me. Thank you for sharing that ??

I only really know the freshwater trout fishing world as far as guides, but it's completely unprofessional to fish while your clients are fishing.

I have several guide friends who are good friends. I'll occasionally pay them if I have another friend coming in from out of town to fish, and I need a drift boat or just want to make sure my out of town friend catches fish.

Once we get on in the trip and things are going smoothly, I'll usually tell them they can fish if they want. Invariably, they refuse to do so. The reasons being: 1) they'll pull fish when we aren't, which makes the client feel like crap. 2) if they're paying attention to fishing, they aren't rendering the service for which they're being paid.

Maybe it's different in the inshore world, but that's how it works in the trout world.
