Was shooting a bowtech extreme but ending up having to sell it around 4 years ago. Looking to get back into bow hunting and wanted some recommendations. Looking to spend 4-800. Dollars. Would rather buy second hand but open to brand new if the price is right

Look into any of the Bear RTH packages. All good bows and their CS is second to none. I personally shoot the Traxx and love it.

I think there are several good bows out there made by Bowtech, Bear, PSE, etc... I've always shot Mathews so I'll give you my recommendations from following their line for the past 10 years.

If I was shopping older bows I would look at a Mathews Switchback XT, Drenalin, or DXT. You should be able to find one of these models used and rigged out well within your price range and still have money left over for arrows, broadhead, and maybe an accessory upgrade if needed.

None of these are "speed" bows but all are very smooth quiet hunting rigs that should serve you well for a lifetime if properly cared for.

With an $800 budget you can shoot a practically brand new bow. Get on archerytalk.com and go to the classifieds. I've bought second hand as well as brand new on archery talk. Just bought my new Obsession bow on there.

Since your budget is already established, the next step is confirming your actual draw length and then researching the new/used market for a bow that will fit you. Not all advertised draw lengths are 100% true. For example Brand X may run 1/4" - 1/2" short and Brand Y may run long. This is why the bow should be specifically tuned to you, not the advertised draw length. DL's can be adjusted with modules or cams that cost from $25 to $125 depending on manufacturer.

That being said, another thing to consider if buying used is "transferrable warranty". Elite and Athens have a transferrable warranty regardless of owner. If you're bow breaks, it will be covered under warranty. Other companies will warranty the bow only to the original owner. Bow breaks and you pay for replacement parts and service work out of your pocket.

I would go to a reputable archery pro shop and ask lots of questions. Be a sponge and test drive various model bows. Many serious bow hunters and archery enthusiasts will avoid BPS, Cabelas, Academy, and big box stores because their customer service and bow tuning knowledge is less than stellar. Ask other bow hunters who is the best archery technician in your area and trust him with your bow.

Honestly, I wouldn't get caught up in "speed" since the published numbers are based on a bow set-up at 30" draw length, 70 lbs. draw weight, and shooting a 350-grain bare shafted arrow. Very, few people hunt with this set-up as they heavier arrows for more Kinetic Energy. Buy what feels smooth and comfortable to you in the draw cycle, and release as all bows are different. A bow that is advertised at 348 fps IBO, will probably be closer to 320 fps when set-up for hunting. My personal hunting bow (28.75" DL, 64 lbs, 400 gr arrow) shoots 285 fps and I get complete pass throughs.

If buying used, Archery Talk will be your best website to shop for a second hand bow. You can also buy used accessories (rest, release, sight, quiver, etc... ) for 30-40% off new prices. Exercise caution as that place can be a zoo at times , kinda like the OT

I brought my bow to Bowies all the time, love the group there. As long as I'm at 280-300fps I'm fine. I shot 60 pounds on a 28" draw. I'll probably buy brand new, but I just wanted some opinions.

Does archery talk have a Louisiana branch?

PM me on Archery Talk LSUGolfer my add is listed on that site. I'm in Tampa but headed back to NOLA for my sisters wedding (and pick up my Halon 32) in early February.

I'd take a look at the Prime bows. I've never owned a Matthews and was almost dead set on trying them this go round (have owned Hoyt, Bowtech, and Elite). But I shot the Halon 6 and Prime at the same time and couldn't make myself like the Halon over the Rize. I just decided I wanted to give Obsession a shot after so much positive talk on their smoothness while still getting great speeds out of them.

You should like it. I have a '14 Evolution and I was shocked how it shoots for a speed bow. It's as easy to shoot as my old Switchback XT and I'm getting 305fps with a 450gr arrow shooting 67 pounds at 30".

With that budget, I'd go after a Hoyt Spyder on Archerytalk

Couldn't get my hands on a Centergy, only one dealer within two hours. I shot the Rize and really liked it. That's coming from an Elite.

This Obsession M6Z so far is nice. I'd have to say just as smooth if not smoother than my elite was, but lighter and feels faster.

I bought a bow a few years ago in hopes to get into bow hunting but never had the time. I bought a PSE Surge for my first bow and it seems like a great bow for the price. Anyone else shoot/heard of this bow?
