is a progressive REALLY necessary? i wouldn't think so. this is going to be done for fun,

Good thought, don't make pleasure a chore. I reloaded all I could shoot and we shot a lot with a simple set up.

I've got a Lee 4 hole turret press. No complaints with it.

I actually use a Lee hand press a lot sitting on the couch watching TV...

I've had it for many years and have reloaded thousands of .44mag & .45 rounds.

All of the big names (RCBS, Lyman, Lee, Hornady, Dillon) make good stuff.

To tell the truth, I've never been a real big fan of the Lee stuff. Some of it looks a little cheap, but a lot of people swear by them.

My order of preference:

1. Dillon / RCBS
2. Hornady
3. Lyman
4. Lee

I would advise getting a good floormat to go in front of your bench, something that you won't mind standing on for hours at a time.

I always say I am going to stay sitting on the stool I have, but that never lasts, it's just easier to stand to operate the reloader.

Lastly, RTFM. You will be glad you did, and you will waste much less brass by learning how to set up your dies properly. It isn't hard but there is a way to do it, which is spelled out in the manual.

I also have the Dillon 550. I learned on it and all of my friends who reload have Dillons. Great press and a great company. Sooner or later you will want a progressive, so why not start with one?

No, KR,started on the progressive. As an old hand told me, some folks reload to shoot and some shoot to reload. Just depends in which you are. I enjoy reloading, but much rather shoot. Like another poster said, I can reload in an hour what may take all day on a single stage.

I enjoy reloading just as much as shooting. It's relaxing and I tinker. But trust me, when it comes time to load pistol rounds, I'd rather load 2000 in 5 hours and be set for which a progressive.

If you want to load a few rounds-----single stage

If you shoot a lot and load 1000's-----progressive

It's really two ends of the spectrum, hence....get both.

I'm sure if there was a progressive progressive you'd be all up in that too. Precision is all it's about.

If you need 9mm or 5.56 I have an absolute shite load.

By the way, if any of y'all plan to load 223 or 300blk and want to reuse 5.56 cases, you'll need a swaging tool. I use the RCBS swaging tool from my video and the master reloading thread.
