For a long time now, I've been on sort of a "hunt" to catch an alligator gar in Baton Rouge. I am a student at LSU and I have been absolutely dying to catch one on rod/reel after I hooked my first in Lake Pontchartrain. Does anyone know of any spots IN or NEAR Baton Rouge that I could catch em???

Anything at all is greatly appreciated.

This must be some sort of joke, it is not like the record Gar from every state that touches it are caught on some unknown body of water that just happens to flow right by Baton Rouge.

1st post is where to catch gar in a city that straddles the MS river? Just does not seem legit.

Mullet is by FAR the best bait option, although I've had much better success with whole mullet.

Haven't been to the Berry Lake area in Bayou Sorrel for a while, but last time I was there the water was completely stagnant and had nothing but gar.

Not sure where to catch them around here but I've caught a few 4-5' long with cut bait a foot or 2 under a cork with 2 big treble hooks. They'll usually grab it, swim off for 20-30 sec and then stop to actually swallow it, and then take off again. Set the hook

Most of the gar that I wind up finding in the BR area are usually shortnose, spotted, or long nose gar and that is not what I'm looking for. I want to know where I can find GATOR gar.

I'm guessing Blind River/Lake Maurepas. That's where they have the garfish rodeo every year.

Have read that False River has a big gar population. I'm staying at a camp up there for the LSU/Bama game. Gonna bring a rod and hope I'm not too hungover to fish for a few hours that Saturday morning
