Fountainebleu State Park - Camping

My son's Cub Scout Pack is going camping this weekend at Fountainebleu in Mandeville.
Has anyone been? What's good? What's bad? Any advice?
This is about 30 boys, ages range from 6 to 10, with at least 1 parent each.
Each family has their own tent, but we are group cooking.
Are there rules regarding campfires, etc.?
We went to Camp Salmon Scout Reservation in MS last year, the boys really enjoyed it. I think Fountainebleu is very different.
Thanks.

Watch our for the pigs that have been coming into the campsite at night. A park rangers warning, not mine. If you take the kids on a night ride around the park you will see some deer.

I've always found it very crowded during the camping season. There are some nice trails there for when you want to get away from the crowd. And let them run around in the woods. We used to play Ninja as kids out there. Good times.

Great park. Lots of pigs and deer in the evenings, nights, and morning. The lake is right there with a pier and there are trails through the woods. Nice park to walk, ride a bike, or hike the trails. Swimmig the lake is even an option.
It will be crowded with scouts.

Kinda crowded. Was super wet when we went a couple of winters ago. The nature trail is nice. Saw deer all over the campsite

lake front is filled with despicables.
late evenings are cool with deer and hogs.
Another cool thing, take them to the lake front at night time, bring bright flashlights. In that pond near splash pad, you'll see dozens of gators. Lots of little ones. Often you can sneak up on a few near bank in water.

As others have said, there are plenty hogs. Some will stroll right through the camping areas. Don't leave garbage laying around. Something (hog, coon, possum) will get into it and you'll have a mess to clean up in the morning.
If you're looking to see hogs, I found the road out to the cabins at dawn and dusk was usually productive.
There's a boardwalk out into the marsh east of the open picnic and playground areas. It's a short trail and good spot to see birds. There's also a longer trail that goes all the way to Bayou Cane (the eastern border of the park). All kind of potential wildlife sightings. Plenty of animal tracks in the mud to try to identify, if the kids are into that
There's a good chance of rain this weekend, so you might want to rig a tarp/fly over your tent to help keep you dry. Camping isn't as much fun when everything is wet.

You'll see a good amount of deer, and some fatass raccoons. I've camped at a good amount of the Louisiana camp grounds, and Fountainbleu is one of the least interesting ones they have. In the future, I would suggest Bogue Chitto, it has a more interesting hiking trail and all around better facilities.
Also, the trail has flooded recently, so that may or may not be open.

Did that area go under in Nate?
I didn't think about that. I was on the marsh boardwalk in February. Sections were still closed from previous storms. You can also see a row of concrete 4x4 posts from a old boardwalk that must have been wiped out by Katrina or maybe Isaac.

How'd the trip go? Was the weather bad Saturday night? Hope y'all did okay and the kids had fun.

Trip went very well.
We moved many of the activities planned for Saturday night to Friday night. Most people packed up and heading home before dusk on Saturday to avoid rain.
The boys had a great time, it was a whole Pack trip, so 40 - 50 boys plus dads, some moms and siblings as well.
The boys saw a few racoons and opossum, saw a deer. Very excited 7 year olds. Their favorite parts of any camping trip, the campfire and night hikes.
Only a few stayed Saturday night. We did not. The ones that stayed said they had a good evening/night until the storms came in around 4am. They ended up packing up in the rain around 7am.
Thanks for the advice and comments. We packed up all the food - the racoons left foot prints on some of our tables/containers, but they didn't get into anything. The boys liked seeing the muddy prints.
This Pack does two camping trips a year, one fall, one spring. I think the spring will be back to Salmen Scout Reservation.

Didn't take them to pond to gator sight see?

Good deal. Glad it worked out reasonably well.

The Den Leader took them on the night hike, I was back at camp cooking, but none of the boys said they saw a gator. I told them about the eyes in the water.

yeah at the pond, you hit it up with flashlights, you'll see dozens of eyes all over and usually you can sneak up on one or two near close bank.

No idea, I went to go hike it around 3 weeks ago and the lady at the front told me the trail was flooded.

My stepson and his wife took their son on that trip. They opted to stay the additional night. The storm rolling in early that morning made the trip even more memorable. Lol
