Interesting info. I've been following this thread for a couple of days and I actually hunt about 1 mile (west) from the 3 mile lake area. I can tell you that there are plenty ducks in this area, however 1 mile can make a huge difference. A couple of years ago I left a lease about 1 mile from my current lease due to a lack of ducks (just didn't see any). Current lease was covered up in ducks last season.

Weird how things can be so different (guess it comes down to food source on a consistent basis to keep them coming back).

Good luck.

LOL. I saw all of yall going back to BR every morning with loads of ducks after not firing a single shot.

Not sure what they are charging this year, but last year was either $5K or $5500.

And you only get to hunt 4 days a week? WTF?

Not too many years ago, the landowners in Kaplan and Guydan would charge this for a whole 640 acre section. Now, they will put 4 blinds on that one section and charge $5k per blind, increasing their per section profit to $20,000.

Like I said earlier, they are very flexable and will open things up toward the end of season. Last season you could hunt from Christmas till the end of the season without the 4 day rule.

Vol,

You might have me confused with a BR group of guys. Last year I actually took over a blind from some guys from BR that had given one up in that area. Funny thing is, I took their blind, they ended up leasing from where I left the previous year.

My move was definitely an upgrade.

kaplan and geuydan of the 70s and 80s is a far cry from what it is today because of it.

but funny how other places have picked up the slack.. aka birds..

I have been hunting north of Kaplan for over 20 years. To say that it has changed would be an understatment! It seems that every 40 ac. field now has a blind. Getting to US 71, at times it has birds and others none. I would not pay 5500 for a blind there(from Opelousas). The folks from Baton Rouge jumped all over this area and pretty well f'ed it up for locals who know what it is worth. (a lot less than 5500!). However, I guess it is worth what someone will pay(I think along the lines of the greater fool theory). I hope you get your money's worth.

There in also lies a problem. Now that its gotten so expensive, folks feel they gotta go everyday to justify the expense. Then there are some who also feel the need to shoot at anything from 70 yards and further. They figure "what the hell, I paid $5500 and I'm gonna get my moneys worth and shoot at anything that flies." And of course, this only makes matters worse for the guy who also paid $5500 and is only 250 yards away.

I guess it depends on what it is worth to you. I did not mean to sound resentful of non-locals, I hunt in Kaplan and pecan island and I live in Opelousas. I just hunted those fields many years ago and felt then as I do now, just not worth it to me. Blind should be about 2000 to 2500.

Did not take it as such. Being a local, my comments were directed at those who have forgotten that hunting is not always about the kill. It was directed at the folks, even locals, who look solely at the economics and killing aspect of it, not the hunt itself.

I agree. I was lucky enough to hunt in the 10 point days when you were limited out before eight(and a mallard hen just happened to be the last duck you killed each day). It's all about the dogs, birds, and friends(some gone) now, not the numbers of birds killed.

I started hunting ducks before the 10 point system. Back in those days we had a lease out of Hopedale were there was a red light just pass the last boat landing. When you came in and the light was green, you were good all the way north to New Orleans. Yellow was that there were a gamewarden in the parish and red there was one at the landing. Back then, gamewardens didn't go on the water.

Hell, you know we didn't feed the ducks. Lets just say that 3 weeks before the season somehow a easy 2000-3000 lbs of corn would fall into each pond on our lease. Dam ponds were GOLD!

Then you had real lead shot which killed ducks that cost you $15-$18 a case. Those were the days. Before that,my Dad use to use a blunt gun mounted in his pirouge and would sell the ducks in the quarters. It was legal back in the day to do that. Oh, he use to make his own decoys which I wished I had them, but Katrina took them away.

I also started hunting before the point system. I hunted(still do)with a friend from Pecan Island whose marsh was a great teal roost. The local game warden stopped by one day to tell us "I wouldn't be shooting too late this weekend, a bunch of Federals gonna be on the island." Now THAT was a long time ago.

Dragging up this old post because I'm looking at leasing a blind from Grezaffi. Jmkidder, any guidance on this one? How many years did you lease from him and what is your overall opinion of the place? Kill count?

It still sucks and probably will for a long time. My neighbor got suckered last year and again this year. My family had a blind there in the late 80's it was pretty sick. Got worse every year until we let it go in the early 90's. That patch of hardwoods in the middle of LJ's place to the SE of the road was a mallard mecca when the rain floated the acorns and bitter pecan.
