Another thing i would do if at all possible is afew weeks before you plant spray roundup to kill everything. We started doing this and our plots grow virtually no weeds. Makes a huge difference.

Lost all my persimmon, apple and sawtooth oak trees that I've planted in the last two years due to the drought. The only thing that survived were the pear trees for us.

This may be stupid but I'll ask anyway...anyone every try to restrict the deer access to a plot to give it time to come up? I've seen this Plotsaver kit sold that has a ribbon barrier that you put around the plot with a solution that goes on the ribbon to keep the deer out. Anyone try this or any other fencing?

see vetch is mentioned a couple of times...never heard of it but will look into it. Any idea if it will last late into the season? Where I am our rut doesn't really start until the end of January and often tips over into February after the season has closed.

Vetch is a summer/fall plot. It will die off during the first freeze. It does fairly well with drought conditions but will flourish in really wet conditions. If you have low lying areas on the property, it will do awesome. Best part is the deer really hit it during the day!

I plant vetch, oats, and rape. The deer hit the rape by far the most late in the season. By the time the vetch plays out after the first frost the rape is just getting right.

We roundup, disc, wait two weeks, roundup again, disc again, then plant. The first year we didn't do that and weeds took over our plots.

I have used biologic, whitetail inst. clovers, and several other blends, but to me the best is Big Buck Blend from the co op. It grows easy and the deer love it. It was developed at Auburn.
