Again, I ain't no expert, that's all just my BS opinion.

I have somewhat limited experience with scopes, but WT's analysis is solid.

Thanks for the advice guys, there's some good info here.

I'm curious as to why you would not put a fixed power scope on anything but a .22? I know they make fixed power scopes that can handle the recoil of high powered rifles. I'm just curious.

ZA,
I'll admit to being a "traditionalist" in many ways. In addition, I've killed a LOT of game using a fixed power scope. Having said that, if I were you I'd go ahead and get a varialble scope, specifically a 3-9X40. While one can kill deer all day long w/ a fixed 4X inside 100 yards (and further), it's good to have the flexibility a variable (sighting in at the range, hunting on a frinds stand on a power line, etc.) provides.Get the best one you can reasonably afford. There are a LOT of highly affordable, yet good, scopes for you to choose from. If you don't already have rings and mounts, I'd suggest getting a Weaver one piece base and Burris Signature Z rings (the ones w/ the plastic inserts).

Fixed power scopes are generally a little cheaper for a comparable variable. They are also a little more true to zero after a few rounds. There are high-powered applications where you might select one. We are, generally, advising against it because you will have fewer opportunities to use a fixed.

Maybe down the line, but for this gun at this time for what you expect to shoot - get the best 3x9 variable you can get. Bushnell and Weaver make a number of options, as do other manufacturers - it is about the most popular scope configuration and a good starting from which to judge others.

Since you're just shooting a 30-06, I think that's really not much of a concern w/ todays scopes, especially w/ a quality scope. Having said that, DO NOT buy a $50 variable Nc Star (or similar cheapie) scope for your 30-06. You should be able to get a quality scope in your stated price range w/o a problem. I now almost exclusively use variable scopes on my handguns. A high powered handgun is harder on a scope than is a similar powered rifle. In all my years of handgun hunting, I've only had problems w/ 2 scopes, both variables. The first was an early run 3-9X Burris that was mounted on a 223 Rem. Contender barrel. It developed a problem in that both cross hairs rotated slightly as the power ring was turned. This happened just before a prairie dog hunt. I took it on the pd hunt, kept it on 9X and it shot well. Sent scope in after the pd hunt and they repaired it. I've shot it ever since w/o a problem. I had an Nc Star installed on a Contender barrel (similar to a 308 Win) that failed big time. The rear lense shot loose and was lying sideways in the scope. They replaced it w/ a new one. Installed the new one on a Ruger Mark 1 22LR and it's done fine.

Great bags.

Scopes...not so much.

(To be fair, I think they're just slapping their name on a bunch of really cheap Chinese imports.)

Buckmasters are really good scopes. I normally use Leupolds but I swear that are about as good for half the price
