Fishing the tides around rigs

When fish in the GoM around rigs which side do you fish on? Do you fish down from the rig (tide moving you away) or up from the rig (tide moving toward the rig) or on the sides? Or do you move around until you find fish?

I spearfished the rigs in the gulf for 25 years and 80% of the fish were shot on the up current side of the rig. We would set the hook on the down current side of the platform and swim all the way across to the other side.
One other observation I made is the southwest rig in a field had the largest concentration of fish.

That's strange. I wonder if other factors play into that such as tides, wind, or even the size of the rig.

This. Easiest way to fish them especially if you have people that don't do it often. Don't have to worry about them drifting baits into the rig. When we go out there with the guys, I fish up current and hold the boat or side and drift by rig. Best way to catch bigger fish. Mangroves get on down side of it and cast underneath.

Upcurrent. The fish are usually there waiting to ambush bait and it's easy to freeline a pogie by the leg for big mangroves.
