Going to take kids to Rosemary beach for spring break. I have a kayak and 16 foot whaler. Is it worth it to take one or both of them? Are there any local launches for the whaler? What is fishing like there in April?

Can u catch cobia off the beach like in Destin? Tarpon ?

I have not been there in 20 years any recommendations appreciated

Lake Powell is just a mile or two w of RB. There is a public launch right off of 98. When the tide is right, you can boat to the gulf. How is the fishing? I have no clue.

I would bring the kayak but leave the whaler. Like the other guy said Lake Powell is right around the corner but it's a brackish lake, not sure how good the fishing is but it's scenic. I don't know that you can actually access the gulf with a boat through Powell, and parking in Rosemary will be a nightmare especially with a trailer. A couple cobia have been caught but should be turned on in a couple weeks.

Check weather/wind and that will help you decide on the whaler. I don't think it's worth the hassle to bring the boat. I've never brought my 19ft boat to Florida and I have yet to regret it but I do wish I had a kayak just about every time I go.

If you do bring the boat make sure the trailer is in good running shape for the 3-4 hrs running on the interstate.

I wouldn't yak out in the Gulf alone. People do it, most don't. Bring a buddy or don't do it. If you look on pff, you can probably find someone to tag along with.

Kings and Spanish can be expected. Someone with numbers can put you on snapper and other reef fish.

They're catching pompano off the beach in Pensacola. You could try that.

You're not going to find a launch into the Gulf on 30A and the bays dont border 30A. If you want to fish in the Gulf then the kayak would be easier and yes the cobia will be running soon. Just wear your life jacket and you'll be fine assuming you're experienced, done it 100 times in a yak, just be on your toes in the breakers. The tarpon won't run until June. If you want to fish the whaler then the closest launches would be Hogtown bayou, which is a haul from the Gulf, or lake Powell which you can access the Gulf at high tide. Other option is putting in at destin harbor and then you're basically in the Gulf. The destin pass doesn't get as choppy as PCB so that's actually a viable option in a 16' whaler if you're just wanting to fish the second sandbar

A yak can be pretty damned productive offshore in the 30A area. I mainly fly fish from our yaks when I'm there, but I get into ladyfish like crazy. I'll also "troll" with a sink tip line if I don't see anything actively schooling and have caught lots of spanish that way. If you're using traditional tackle, I imagine trolling will be even more productive.

You can launch into the surf at Grayton Beach if you have a permit and there are some artificial reefs there but IMO leave the Whaler and use the Kayak. There will be a Zillion people at Rosemary.

Absolutely. I've gotten into Spanish, ladyfish, sharks, and Bonita from my yak in that area. I have friends that live around there and go a lot more often that have caught kings, cobia, red snapper, and mahi from their kayak.

Lady fish on the fly are a blast
