Have a large 1/2 acre plus I want to bring up to finish grade with rest of my property. Need about 6-8" across all to bring to final level. Too large of an area and to way to expensive for top soil only. Friend mentioned "Fill dirt" may be cheaper but I have no clue what that exactly is. Can someone educate me on the finer points of dirt content.

Any fill dirt is a mixture of sand and clay. Going rate around my parts is about $3+ a yard plus shipping.

I haven't got it in a while, but that's pretty damn cheap. The damn fuel bill makes up the most of the cost

Wouldn't that be considered shipping?

Yeah. I'm saying I had no idea the actual dirt was that cheap

Guess that's where the phrase "cheap as dirt" came from?

Dirt may be cheap, good soil is worth every penny.

Scrape your existing top soil back into a pile out of the way then spread cheap fill dirt "clay" to within 2 inches of the desired grade. Then re-spread your pile of topsoil to finish grade. Level with a dirt drag and re-seed.
I did that to my yard at the beginning of last summer and by the end of that summer you couldn't tell it was done.

If you live close to a sugar mill- you can buy Wash Mud just like fill dirt. It's the little bit of dirt that gets washed off the cane before it goes into the mill. It's the best topsoil (because it is) you can get, and it's cheap- $3/yard loaded is about what it goes for.

This is different than Filter Press which is the really black mainly soil material that gets sucked off the juice as it's processed- people will put it out as well, but it stinks too much to put in a neighborhood yard- at least in the short term after putting it down.

If you don't count compaction, you only need about 7 loads with a 30 yard trailer- can you get in there with something like that? It is a helluva lot cheaper to move 30 yards at a time vs. the normal 14 yards in a dump truck.

That $3 a yard is about what a trucker pays. Their maker up can be as high as $5 a yard + shipping.

OP, were are you located at?

Im not familiar with a sugar mill near the Denham area. $3 yard would be nice though.

If you ever plan to build on it, fill with structural fill, 8" lifts, 95% compaction, -3/+3 moisture.

Any suggestions on reliable dirt haulers around Denham. Last Few I called clearly don't want the business.

Job is probably too small. Rent a rig yourself.

Point is to bring in additional dirt. Hardly think 30+ loads is a small job.

If it is not worth their time, you are probably calling too large of a company. A days worth of work is not worth their time.
