If you have plenty of money and spare time go for Field Trials. If you are a weekend warrior go with hunt test.

The way you presented the question sounds like you should start with hunt test.
AKC hunt test or UKC hunt test are places to start. Each has websites with a wealth of information on local clubs and contact info.

whether it is HRC/UKC or AKC also depends on where you are. hunt tests = dog graded on a standard - judges, other handlers and pro's there will help you...

field trial - if you are an amateur and train your own dog - and still handle it - you will be less than 10% of the norm... getting a ribbon at a field trial - is pretty hard for dog and handler...

as for ack vs hrc/UKC... 1st tier.
4 marks biggest difference akc guns are where birds come from - cannot resend a dog on a mark - dog must deliver to hand... HRC - handler must wear camo. gun is next to dog.
also AKC will use a live shot flyer at all levels.

2nd tier.... dog must be steady. HRC handler handles gun - and an unsafe gun action (even minor) can fail you. double and a blind... sometimes a walk up or a diversion is included - AKC shot flyer - dog must deliver to hand.

delivery to hand at these is a lot more complicated than you think - the birds get pretty nasty pretty quick.

where are you located?

I can't believe KemoSabe's Bat Signal didn't go up for this post. He is the OB expert on all things related Field Trial/Hunt Test.

If you had the dog trained, I would ask the trainer. You might be better off doing hunt test like mentioned above. If your dog won’t run a straight line or go between gaps of brush I wouldn’t start at field trials. You have to be on your A game during trials, also.

I just got off the water DOOD
My ears were twitching earlier though so that bat signal was coming through.
1. Do you have an unlimited amount of spare change to
hire a trainer?
2. Are you happily married?
3. Do you have chilrens?
4. How competitive are you?
5. What you will spend on your dog will fund a nice IRA.
6. Most start out hot but lose interest after the Thrill
is gone".
7. Find a group to train with and don't listen to the
one's who talk the loudest.
8. Email me @ Kemosabe65@yahoo.com and i will send you
all of my training dvd's for the cost of postage, wife
wants them gone.

Slight thread hijack. I'm fishing with a group at HR&G next Friday 1 November. Lodging there on Thursday night. You gonna be working?

Nope, not unless someone gets sick or they need additional boats. Good trout in the lake if the wind doesn't blow like two tweenks in a sack. 25 trout, 1 red and cleaning fish for 11:00. My guys had to get this morning.

Look up Amite River Hunting Retriever Club on face book. Great folks! Out of the game now but made lots of friends with them. It’s highly addictive!
Someone was nice enough to post you a link above! Start with them.
The trial game is a whole different animal trust me.

ARRC is one of the best run in the nation with some of the best grounds also. Loved judging for them at DCI back in the day. Never understood why a grown man had to ask me to go pee:):)

Had one inmate kept asking for a cigarette, finally got aggravated and asked him he if he wanted to go back in his cage. He quit asking.

Plenty of “Pro’s” Shouldn’t be taking $$$ for training. Usually have a big SS trailer and “Pimp” truck with the wrap advertising services.
Bet spillway was as cold as big lake Saturday morning.
