The link says the video showed something on 4 legs, so the dude was crawling.

Doesn't sound like they knew each other, and the police confirmed he was on all fours when shot. Probably trying to get closer to a bunch of hogs. Pretty dumb for different groups of hunters to be on the same property at night without knowing each other is there, but doesn't sound criminal.

Agreed, but the land owner should've relayed that info that there was another guy hunting on the property - especially at night. Sad story.

Yeah I wasn't pointing the finger at anyone in particular. Sounds like the landowner gave a bunch of people permission to hunt and didn't inform anyone there might be others there. Whole bunch of things wrong with how it went down, but I guess you can say that about any hunting accident.

I'll never understand how you could accidentally shoot someone while hunting.

I've never taken a shot where I didn't 100% know what it was.

I've seen guys who work cattle and hunt a lot get mixed up on whether or not some heat is a cow or a hog, and it's made me paranoid while hunting with a thermal to the point of making absolutely sure it's a pig. I can't imagine how a human would ever look like a pig unless you are drunk or spend no time glassing it

Will the outcome be that the landowner gets sued and the woman skates?

Well, we just don't have enough info to say at this point.

Definitely a teaching point that when hunting at night you do not crawl in the grass to try and get a closer shot.

I gotta disagree. You should be able to do whatever you want at night so long as you're not breaking the law including hunting or crawling around a piece of property. The person shooting at the blob on their shitty thermal optic is the sole person at fault in this situation. Not the guy who got shot. Not the landowner. The teaching point is you don't shoot at something unless you are 100% sure you want to destroy that thing. A thermal optic doesn't give you the right to destroy all heat signatures at night with reckless abandon. She should be charged with manslaughter.

Lots of four legged things it could've been. Would've been illegal if she shot most of them.

Glad that is just your opinion

If they outlawed it tomorrow it would make
me an outlaw

Hands down the best solution to crop depredation

We have had dogs, traps, snares, hot wires and all the other gimmicks

Bullets aren't forgiving

Hogs are intelligent animals. They get smart to lights. We run blacked out golf carts with night vision or green lights.

Heard some first hand info from a cop that was at the scene.
Seems the guy shot was actually a prior felon who neither had permission to be on the land nor ,obviously, should he have had a gun.
The couple hunting thought they were the only ones there.

The woman, at this time, will not be charged as he understood, but DNR is still reviewing all the info before they make a final determination.

That said, I think the woman should be charged with something. You never,EVER shoot at a target that you cannot CLEARLY identify....PERIOD. Anyone hunting with a thermal scope should have a frickin clue as to how their quarry moves/acts...enough to help clarify without a doubt the intended target.
A fox doesn't move like a yote, a deer doesn't move like a calve and a human doesn't move like a hog...even on all fours.

I agree, and I don't have much experience with thermal scopes so tifwiw. But I can see this happening easily. Tons of videos on YouTube of guys shooting the first hog (easily identifiable) and then the rest of them scattering all over and the guys just shooting fast left and right with virtually 0 target identification. At 200 yards out, I could easily see another hunter 100 yards away from the pigs and the hunter with the thermal moving laterally shooting and shooting at the other hunter.

Right, wrong, or whatever I can't see how anyone would disagree thermal scopes can be very dangerous. I don't think one shooting deserves a movement to outlaw them by any means though.

Eta: my point is that you can't argue a thermal signature is a heck of a lot closer than a day light look between a human and a deer/ hog. Given, the humans not standing up.

This seems like the definition of manslaughter. While I appreciate hearing the additional details to the story, I hope those reasons aren't why she got off. Neither details provided by the cop are adequate defenses for manslaughter.

Obviously, you are always responsible for your bullet when it leaves the barrel.

The penalty for felon in possession is 5-10 years, not death by vigilante. It's also possible under certain circumstances for a prior felon to be able to legally possess a firearm. I'm not saying his trespassing or possible illegal possession is OK and he may have been a total piece of shite. I'm just saying it's not a valid reason to give the shooter a pass.

This. The responsible party should pay the price for any negligent use of an item. Not everyone else who has thus far used the same item responsibly.
