Does anyone have recs for a fast and reliable mower? Bought some property and we have about 6 acres that need to be mowed at least once a week. About 85% of it can be mowed as fast as the mower can cut and the there’s a few drainage swales and trees that can all be mowed or mowed around.
I’m looking at a hustler super z hyperdrive and a scag cheetah with 60/61 inch decks but want to see what the pro’s on the OB say.

I have a scag with 27 hp and I have yet to find ground smooth enough to cut wide open. I’m not full time cutting yards but have cut quite a few.

I’ve got to stick with a ztr. Tractors will rut it up in some spots

Do a zero turn.

I cut 6 acres when I was younger with a tractor. Would take a solid 8-10 hours with the tractor and finish mower.

BIL comes in with his zero turn and does the whole thing in 4 hours.

Hire it out?

Take the money for a new commerical mower and see how far it go hitting it out so you don't have to fill with it every week :)

Scag can roll with it.
I cut 2 acres with lots of trees with a 50” ex-mark but it’s about maxed out. 2hrs tops
I love the exmark for what I cut but if I had to cut more each week, I’d go Scag

If you’re gonna do it yourself, DIxie Chopper is supposed to be one of the fastest ZTRs on the market. My Kubota is pretty fast. Scagg, Hustler also seem to motor along.

If it’s 6-7 acres of lawn type grass get a ZTR. If it’s more grown up like a paddock or vacant lot, look at a different set up.

About a years worth of mowing is the same $$ as a brand new top of the line ztr.

To push mow an acre of lawn (assumed flat with no landscaping obstacles) with a 21" mower deck at 3 mph, it will take approximately 1 hour and 55 minutes. At this rate you will be able to mow about 4 acres in about an 8 hour day.

How fast were you going on that tractor .2 mph?

I don’t know anything about Hustler but I have a Scag Tiger Cat with 52 inch deck,I cut 5 acres in 4-5 hrs. and I have lot of trees and flower beds to mow around.Forget the finishing mower,I have one(60 in.) and it takes twice as long.I had an Exmark but it didn’t cut as nice as Scag,I had to double cut a lot of the grass.Only thing I don’t like about the Scag is has greasable spindles, have to grease every 40 hours with lithium grease. I took the metal tube off a grease gun and attached it to a rubber tube on hand squeeze grease gun so it’s not too big of a chore. On the other hand,I never have build up of grass clippings on the deck of the Scag, the Exmark I had to scrape grass clippings with putty knife off the deck(underside) almost every time.
By the way,the best grease guns I have found are the ones John Deere dealer sells.

I’d see what I could get in a 72” mower deck.
Dixie chopper makes one, Bush big makes one and I’m sure the big brands have at least one model with a 72” or greater deck. That extra 12” per pass will cut your time significantly on 6-7 acres.

Yea, it’s probably just me but there is no way in hell I would mow 6 acres every week with anything 60”.

Dixie chopper sucks. I have a Scag tiger cat 60" with 32hp Kawasaki engine and love it. Cuts much better than a Dixie chopper. Has about 3000 hours with no problems

My dad bought a 60" gravely and absolutely loved it. He used to bushhog our road to the back and around the crawfish pond with the tractor. He did it one day with the gravely and did it faster than the tractor. The next week he traded the 60" for the 72" and never has used that bushhog since. I am pretty sure he has the 35hp Kawasaki motor. Wherever the hell he bought it, actually had a deal with 0% financing.

I used to cut 12 acres at LSU on a 72" diesel john deere. It felt like I was cutting at 20mph. I also cut 8 on a 54" scag and that thing was badass too. At 72" cut that diesel was incredible though.

Any unit with a Perkins transmission and 60” to 72” deck will get the job done.
Looking $7k on up depending on engine along with bells & whistles.

Now steep slopes like I have around my home on Toledo Bend you have to get a steering wheel zero turn or buy slower cutting machines. Mine is a dual real wheel with a steering wheel. I am cutting some slopes up to 30 degrees which a lap bar unit cannot do. Then cut flat land faster than similar lapbar units. The unit around $15k and to me worth every penny.
