Looking at a boat with an Evinrude ETEC - i know evinrude announced they are not making outboards anymore, but any advice on this motor would be a big help.

Wouldn’t touch it.
Discount what repower would cost.

I have a 2015 115 ETEC it has been a great motor. The only knock I have is I have to order XD-100 oil online because no place around me carries it.

As much hate as the ETEC’s get the few people I know that have them have all been good motors. The first generation ETEC’s were junk, the newer ones were solid motors.

Finding someone who wants to work on them is primarily why they won’t move with one on the transom.
There’s a 24 transport I would love to buy but the 250 etec is a deal killer.

That's where i thought this was headed. I found a Blazer Bay 1860 that i loved, but had the etec evinrude.

Also know the early Kenners are nice, then the guy starting making Frontier/Blackjack.

I'm looking for a low end used 18-20'. Do you guys have any recommendations for other make/models similar to the Blazer 1860?

My first one was 250.
After they put a new block on it the motor still is running fine which I sold a few years ago.

Then sold my pro gator with Evinrude right before the bankruptcy and I never had an issue with that motor.

Ok, motors once the kinks are worked out.
Largest issue you will have is finding parts and someone to work on them. The same issue I had when OMC went under and it was a pain to find some parts for the control boxes. I had to end up buying a new control box as it was hard to find a new key switch. Things like that will piss you off down the road.

Unless the boat hull is in great shape and the price reflects Evinrude’s bankruptcy I would pass on it.

If you like the boat
- the price is good
- an option is to find a good used motor in another brand
- sell the Evinrude etec
Or
If you like the boat and the price is right.
The motor could last you years before you need major service. You could buy a new motor and the day the warranty runs out it blows a rod. That unfortunately the nature of the beast.
Keep the boat and accept that you will have a hard time finding service or possibly parts.

Our experience - had a 2008 300 Etec (G1) bought used in 2013. Had already had powerhead replaced under warranty. Lower unit crapped out in 2018 - gears stripped. Mid-unit had to be replaced next year due to corrosion behind the mounts. Multiple times sheared motor mount bolts, in 2020 both bolts sheared, bent the throttle rod and cracked the powerhead housing.

Gave it to our mechanic to use as parts and put a new 300 Suzuki on.

ETA - We had a good mechanic who swears by the G2, but no resale value.

Bayou Outboards in Metairie works on them. Have been using them for my 2007 115 E-tec. They also sell the xd 100 oil.
