east coast eel fishery

This is how yankees and canucks make some $ now on the east coast. 10 yrs ago the price was $100/lb now its $3K - thx to the asian market. So when you eat sushi eel the young come from the east coast, transported to asia, raised for 18 mo then sold. Poaching is amazing, fishers that were making $20K or so a season 10 yrs ago are now multimillionaires .... the east coast is the only open and consitent fishery for elvers in the world. There 2000+ young eels/lb. There are eels on the gulf coast but they are nearly as abundant.

I think Discovery has a show on the fishery in Maine.

I watched a show recently on it, was interesting.

sorry the link didnt work - search on google or you tube for coal water cash - that will get you the video. Deadliest catch and swamp people have nothing to worry about from a ratings standpoint. Intersting how closures in other parts of teh world for slamm eels (Europe, Asia) have spiked the price - I hear that they can catch elvers in Caribbean and at $2-3K/lb you can bet they will catch everyone they can
