I know of a big bayou that i'm thinking about hunting in September for teal. I've never hunted teal before so I'm wondering how 'big' the water needs to be for teal. (This particular bayou is about 50 yards wide). Also part of this bayou happens to run near a major road. How far away from the road should I expect the teal (and other ducks if I hunt it for them) to feel comfortable landing?

I've killed teal a time or two in narrow waterways. Probably depends on the area around it. good luck

how deep is the bayou? Teal like shallow water. Watch out for wood ducks.

I would venture to say that you aren't going to have much sucess in teal season on a bayou. They like to mill around in open areas.

You need the water in the less than a foot range. And ditto on the wood ducks, they are here in force early this year. If you cant tell the difference, wait a half hour after shoot time.

Teal huntin in timber is difficult anyways. I'm not saying that you can't kill them in the timber, it's just not exactly what I call ideal teal hunting environment. You would have more luck in a field. Although, on the other hand, I've killed so many in timber before that we were lighting groups of 20's and couldn't shoot them because we wanted big ducks. It can happen, it's just not ideal.

Where do you live? Might be a place close by that holds some teal.

May want to scout it in advance to see if they are feeding or roosting anywhere around it.

You would only be getting passing shots as they leave or come back to sleep - if they are so inclined to fly by the bayou

Shallow water. They will come in to feed. That's when you get them to decoy.

Yeah shallow water is good. If its never been hunted then that could be good. Get you some waders and get out there hunkered next to a tree and get you some decoys and see what happens. You know anybody who can call ducks?

Growing up, we had a camp on a bayou. Killed lots of ducks but never teal. Mallards love to go there after feeding.

You can kill a bunch "running" it. Hang tight in the corners, that's where they love to stay.

You can also kill woodies. If you find a spot they like, they'll always be there. Drop some corn from time to time. Check your local laws though.
