Catahoula and Concordia Parish where we slaughter ducks, a squealer is a wood duck.

Woodies actually squeal, hence the nickname. Whistling ducks chirp.

I'm in Ellick, btw. Common nickname for woodies.

Where I come from we roost squealers or jump shoot them off creeks and they look like what yuppies call wood ducks. We also catch White Perch or Crappie using jigs on a baptist fishing pole, which means it collapses to fit in your trunk so the preacher won't know you're going fishing after church.

yep same duck. I call them mexican whistling ducks. We are overrun with them down in Houma. My neighbor has a dozen of them at his bird feeder every morning and there are huge flocks flying over my house every afternoon. I think i may put some corn out and duck hunt my back yard 3

ETA: Never heard a wood duck called a squealer either. Always just called them wood ducks.

In northern Louisiana, the Wood Duck is sometimes referred to as a "squealer".
