Things are not what they were where I used to hunt. As a child I remember Pecan Island, Welsh and Gueydan were crawling in ducks. Now, the few hunts I've made in the past few years have sucked.
I do believe the numbers are estimates and perhaps the process for estimating populations in inadequate. Unseasonably warm temperatures over the past few years and changed farming practices seem like the biggest culprits to me. I believe the migratory pattern is slowly changing and LA will continue to see declines while areas north of LA will remain in the birds.

No declines in the marshes of SE-LA!
If anything, we might have had an increase in birds.

The swamps of St. James Pa. don't even know what a mallard is anymore.
Maybe because of giant salvania? Not realy sure.
Wood ducks are still here though.

The winter survey for NELA hasn't been done yet. NW LA and 1/2 of the coast was just done last week. Curious to know what area of LA the 350-400k count came from and how you or whomever did the counting came about those numbers. They are truely staggering if anywhere near those numbers in one parish.

Yeh what parish was these surveys done?

You will see a big push about the 2nd week of Feb. Our crew has been stacking them up in AR this year. Not quite what we had last year but very close.
