I know there are kayak enthusiasts and drone/ go pro fans on the OB.

The video is a bit long, but it captures some great ariel shots of the start and the first day or two of the race.

Participants have 88 hours to paddle the 340 miles from Kansas City to just west of St. Louis. This year the river as almost at flood stage and was close to being canceled due to safety concerns.

That can't be right. That would mean they somehow go northeast through the state.

The do cross the entire state. St Charles is the finish line. I didn't think many would know that as compared to St Louis.

Haha...whoops. I was thinking KC was in the southwest corner of the state. Stupid! So, it's pretty much just downstream, east in the Missouri River, then?

Thanks for posting the video. Very intriguing.

Made me do some research because I had so many questions, most answered here.

Missouri American Water MR340

I have never seen the catamaran set-up on a kayak before. Pardon the stupid question, but is that basically an aid for stability and speed? TIA for any answers/tips.

I was addicted to following your GPS tracker when you did it last year.

Yes, an outrigger or catamaran setup is mainly for stability. Some of the boat hulls are only 12-16 inches wide so they are very unstable. They can often be raced shorter distances (40-75 miles) with just the main hull. With this race, fatigue sets in after 75 or so miles and you need more stability or your core muscles would give out. This is also a non-stop race which means you need to paddle through the night to be competitive. Stability is really an issue at night when you are tired and bumping into logs and other debri in the water. Getting back in the kayak if you flip is darn near impossible when the hull is that skinny. My boat is 21 inches wide and I know I probably couldn't do it while tired and in the dark.
