Looking into getting me a little buddy. I'm looking for a dog that would be a great companion for me. I live on approximately 1.7 acres, but the dog will have access to around 15 acres. The land is not completely secluded so I would need a breed that will stay close to home or I'll have to put a shock collar on him. I'll have plenty room for him to run, but I won't be able to work him out for multiple hours a day (shift work makes that hard). I want a dog that can transition from being outside while everyone is away, and move into the house at night or when everyone is home.

Some of the obvious breeds I've thought about
Golden Retriever
Labrador
Boxer
Catahoula
Border Collie
Vizsla (dogs 101 talk about how clean they are)

Would love to hear stories about temperament, loyalty, and overall awesomeness. Thanks guys

Vizsla

Hyper and like to run, could possibly run away

Golden Retriever

More likely to just stay around the house IMO

Border Collie

Also likes to run

Labrador

Best bet IMO

Blue Lacy is another cool breed to look into but it will need a job (cows to pen or squirrels to tree or something).

A lab is always a good safe bet.

Some labs like to roam, though. I wouldn't feel safe with any dog outside an enclosure - traffic, snakes, rabies' exposure, etc. 15 acres is a lot of area, but a lot of potential to get into trouble.

Let me know if you decide on a catahoula and want to adopt one. I can put you in touch with some people

All of the primarily outside labs I have known will go off for a day or two at a time randomly. That being said, the ones who spend equal time inside and outside are great, with inside ones being the best behaved. Just gotta make sure they are cool in the summer.

Too hot for a golden. If you can find a calm Catahoula, that would be perfect

My next dog will be either another black lab or a BMC, but 80% chance it'll be a lab

GSP? Mine loves to run and be out in front, but never out of reach so to speak. Depends on if you will have fence for them to hang out in during the day... As with all breeds some will run and not come back and some are opposite. Check out the parents/breeder spend a little money and get a good dog.

Look into a GSP. Hyper and needs exercise but once it's inside they'll just want to be around you.

Mine is either wide open or passed out there is no in between, and can go from one to the other in the blink of an eye. If I put him outside he just sits at the door barking and scratching and wants me out there with him. If I'm outside cutting grass he's barking and scratching to be out with me. Loyal to a fault is the best way to describe him but that's the worst I can say about him.

my advice is the same as always
go to a shelter, save a mutt, and make a friend for life

This is hit or miss. I've got a dog that I rescued 7 years ago that has been an amazing companion. He's a pure mut. Boston Terrier, bulldog, etc... He's just awesome.

I've also adopted dogs that were a mess. If the dog was not socialized when it was young, or mistreated from an early age, you'll have your hands full with a dog that is potentially not very loyal at all.

This week I rescued a 2 year old english bulldog that is a complete mess. He's going to be a project and is going to take some work, but I think he'll eventually end up being a good pet.

Rescuing dogs can be just as expensive or more than buying from a breeder or from a newspaper ad. Vet visits, spay/neuter, medication, etc... Adds up.

I'm not above this by any means. I will need to make sure that it is a dog that won't be a complete mess. I've grown up and had dogs my entire life, but I am by no means a dog whisperer. With all the land I can see myself multiple dogs. So, maybe shelter dogs might be a better option once I get a stable dog or 2

Beautiful dog... Definitely an option

never heard of the breed. Will have to check em out

I love Catahoulas, but most people use em for hog dogs or work dogs. Had a buddy tell me they can get aggressive. I'd have to find a pup or rescue that comes from a more laid back blood line.

I got my lab from the SPCA. Just get in good with one of the ladies that works there, and they'll call when something good comes in. One lady at my local SPCA knew me when I was younger. I had to hang out with her fat daughter for 6 months until I got this dude

Look into the GWP and Drahthaar. I have a 6 month old male and he's great so far. Not quite as hyper as the shorthairs but the drive is still off the wall.
