Right now at the camp I have a $35ish Kobalt from Lowes. It gets the job done and I sharpen it a occasionally. I now need one at home. Do I want the Kobalt or the 2x price Fiskars or some way cool OT Baller axe I've never even heard of?

Thoughts?

I have an Estwing axe and a couple of hatchets. They’re ok but that’s about it.

Stupid spell check. Jackets for hatchets.

Yep, uncle was a black smith.

And we've been handing them down to keep'em in the family.

Snow & Nealley is a 150+ year old axe maker in Maine. The fact the company has survived is testimony to their quality. Unfortunately; the company offers a smaller range of axes nowadays. Their now discontinued double bit axe lasted years at my old camp and took a beating. Their 3 1/2 single bit is a legend in the Northwoods.

I have one of these, too, it’s a short handled fricker though, 2.5lb maybe?

I'm a fiskars fan boy. Their axes and splitting mauls are excellent and practical. I've split A LOT of firewood with a fiskars. I do have an estwing hatchet that I like a lot.

Granfors makes really sexy wood handle stuff. It's super expensive though, and I never felt the need to entertain that.

Sounds about right. They made a somewhat smaller model that was very popular. I was given one in Boy Scouts back in the day. Good for chopping and kindling work.

Love my Fiskars X27 36" splitting axw since the day I bought it. I've never had an axe that is so good at not getting stuck in the firewood. That was when I learned there are axes made just for splitting and still not be a maul. I've liked almost everything I've bought made by Fiskars. Surprising since they sell the stuff at freaking walmart.

I'll see what models I have tomorrow. I have a splitting maul and a regular 3lb chopping axe. Both are old and abused and still just fine.

They are not sexy like a gransfoes, and there's legitimate arguments that a hardwood handle is better. I personally like the utility and the value of the fiskars much more. They're indestructible. You don't have to wince when you overswing and smack the handle.

Council tools makes a badass axe for the money. Still made in America I think.

I have this one laying around somewhere. Whenever I bought mine I'd done a lot of reading on them and joined a few axe groups on Facebook. The council tools axe was reccomended a lot.

Got this one from Lowe’s probably a decade ago. Just sharpen it periodically. I even leave it out in the weather which I probably shouldn’t

I have double bit Michigan Axe from my grandfather in Michigan. I don't use it. I use a splitting maul for splitting wood and other tools for trimming branches. Hatchet for splitting kindling.

I have an 8lb isocore fiskars. Best splitting maul I've ever used.

The other one is a 24" regular ol axe. Also great.

The estwing hatchet rides around on my backpack and gets used a whole lot. It can be a little more useful than a machete just because it packs better.
