Privately owned lake with no connections (other than drainage) to other public bodies of water. Do I still need a fishing license? My lake is catch-and-release only.

ETA: Formal response from the WLF:
quote:

Yes, regardless of the location/size of the waterbody, all persons taking fish in Louisiana must be licensed. The cost of basic fishing license is $9.50 and can be purchased online, via our 1-800 number or from one of our many license vendors throughout the state.

Thanks for checking!

ETA2: Not so fast!! Thanks to TigerDeacon, I dropped RS 56:27 on her and she recanted,
quote:

Based on the parameters provided, you do not need a license as long as the waterbody is privately owned AND self contained.

Well there you go. Mystery solved. Know your rights.

Those fish belong to the federal government, boy. Learn your place.

I would assume so. And it's only $10.

A bit different than hunting private land. Those fish aren't going anywhere and aren't part of the general population.

Ok... but I'm not killing the fish, I'm not firing any projectiles, and the fish aren't "general population," they're privately stocked, so it's a little different.

I know in Texas, private property is exempt, but I couldn't find anything regarding private property exemptions in LA.

I wonder if everyone on those big fish farms is required to have a fishing license?

I wouldn't think so. We used to fish all the time at my great grandparents property. He had stocked catfish down in his pond. No one ever had a license. But you would have to know how to get there in the first place. Way back on his farm. If it was easily seen from the road, I might think differently or at least research it a little more than just asking on a message board.

Edit: Just read it again. So this is your property that backs up to a lake? I would get a permit. They're cheap and easy.

I was going to ask if Nascar helped you with your pond, but if several houses back up to it I'm guessing the answer is no.

This is a pond not able to be accessed from the road. You can only get to it from someone's backyard, as it's completely surrounded by houses.

See, this is why I asked.

It's crazy how you can't get an easy answer from the DWF website.

ETA: I emailed someone at the DWF for a direct answer.

It's like green jeans showing up on your fishing day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures
