I'm looking for a rifle to buy my dad this year. Hes been shooting my 35 whelen or borrowing my brothers rifle. What are my options on the cheaper rifles that will still shoot consistent? I've got a 700 and they're just too high. My Fil gave my wife a rem mod 770 and it feels like a cheap pos. I figured there had to be better ones in the lower price range.
TIA

I've heard good things about the Ruger American Rifle, and I think they I are just a shade under 500

I want one but can't get the damn wife to stop planning shite so I can have the extra scratch to buy.

Someone who owns one might be able to back me up a little more on this but the Ruger American comes in right under $500 in a variety of calibers.

It's a fantastic time for that price range. There's some very good, very affordable rifles out there.

Look at:
Ruger American
Savage axis
Remington 700 sps
Marlin X7

You'll probably like one of those.

Are the Rugers good rifles? I've got a ruger 10-22 and lc9 but I've never shot any of their centerfire rifles.
Those Tikkas look like nice guns especially at those prices

You just missed out on the Ruger American rifles for 199 at Walmart. Planning on shooting mine soon. I'll let you know how it doesn't if you are see deciding. A few OB'ers picked them up. Maybe someone will come by with a review

Iv been looking at the ruger American ranch rifle in .300 blackout. You can find them on the Internet for 386 bucks. Also, go to slickguns and there is a Remington 700 adl for sale for 308 bucks, but I have no idea on the quality of those.

Love my new Ruger American. It is sort of ugly and rough looking but the action is good trigger is great and it shoots better than I can. Marlin's quality after being bought by Remington is hit or miss.

Savage is great in that price range too

You may luck out at a WM near you. I'd go look and see if they have any rugers left. One in lafayette still had some last week.

Cabelas has the Remington 700 with a scope for 409 plus a 50 dollar rebate. Unless I'm missing something in your request

Howa 1500 with Hogue Stock. Just to be different. They make the Weatherby Vanguard.

OEW,
Downshift pretty much nailed it....Indeed it's a VERY good time to be looking for an inexpensive deer rifle.

The regular Savage rifles are not nearly as inexpensive as they used to be, but my personal experience is that they're certainly very accurate. If you come across one at an attractive price, jump on it. I have no personal experience w/ Mossberg, Axis nor the American, but have read good reviews on all three. OTOH, I do have a Marlin bolt action I bought on sale from Bass Pro 4-5 years ago. My personal experience w/ one has been very favorable. I bought one in 270 Win at a good price just to have around as a loaner/backup deer rifle. I've got a grand total of $370-380 dollars in it, including Pentax scope, Weaver base and Burris Signature Z Rings. It shoots 3 shot groups less than 1" at 100 yds w/ both Winchester and Remington ammo.

Go to a couple stores, handle them and decide which features you like (e.g. 2 position vs 3 position safety, etc). Keep us updated.

Remington 700. You can pickup the ADL for $390
At academy or cheaper on slickguns as someone stated. I got a Ruger American on clearance. I sold it 2 weeks later I just didn't like it. The ADL comes with the same trigger, barrel and bolt as the other models. Just a different stock which can easily be changed.
