I'm seeing good reports on the new Stevens 334.

It runs around $350-400

Weatherby Vanguard in .308

Vortex Diamondback 4x12x40

If you want to go a little cheaper you can get the Howa rifle which is essentially the exact same gun as the weatherby vanguard for about $150 less.

Howa 1500 in .308

For someone new to the game, go with one of the popular and available calibers. It doesn’t have to be .308, but I would stick to .308, .270, 30-06.

Don't go crazy on your first rifle, get into as economically as possible. Folks will tell you to buy a scope that costs more than the rifle, don't do that. Start at your local pawn shops. Find a rifle that fits you that looks barely used. If it has a scope, it will be 50/50 whether the scope is good, so consider the scope lagniappe. If you do have to ditch the scope, buy a reasonably priced replacement from Academy.

You're not snipping the Taliban at 1000 yards, you shooting one of the dumbest animals on the plant at 100 yards. Whatever rifle you buy will hold its value, so if you get the hunting bug, you can sell that rifle and easily upgrade. Whatever you buy make sure there is plenty of ammo for it, walk through Academy and see what they have a lot of on the shelves, .308, 30.06, .270, .243 and many others will be plentiful.

A larger caliber, like a 30.06 is very forgiving, you don't have to make a great shot to drop a deer in it tracks, a caliber like a 6.5 creedmore is less forgiving (but more accurate at longer distances - and easy to shoot).

As you get into hunting you'll talk to a lot of folks and learn more about it, take that knowledge to upgrade your skill and equipment.

There's a guy selling a brand new Remington 700 in 243 for $400 in the Lafayette area.

Well pardner,
Not much info to go by. But a good choice is the tried and true 30-30 lever action.

Cant go wrong with .270

Also, there's a good book out there somewhere written by a fella who killed every north american mammal with one.

tons of great options that will get the job done.

I would suggest something with readily available ammo. 270 or 30/06

Ruger American for the rifle, leupold for the glass. Basic 3x9 works in most all situations.

For South Carolina? I'd go with a 308 all day in South Carolina.

Where are you planning on hunting? Private or public? If your state has a primitive season like Louisiana you might look at getting a cartridge you can use during primitive as well as rifle.

The first rifle I use to deer hunt with was a 30-06 that I barrowed. For me, I knew that was too big of a gun because it really "tore up" that deer.

The next year I bought a Remington 700 in a .243 cal. and have been shooting it for over 30 years when not bow hunting. If you can make a good shot, the deer will drop or maybe go a few yards. The 100 gr Rimington Cork-Lock is all I ever use.
