I'm not saying neither are capable but I'd probably get a .25-06 or .280, over a .270 or .300 WinMag.

I don't have anything close to that nice, I'd want it to be a little different.

What I don't understand is you baws wanting to lug a 10-12 lb "tactical"/heavy barrel rifle around for deer hunting. I want a Rem 700 Mountain rifle/BDL or equivalent weight-wise for hunting. For pissing contests and ringing steel at 800yds get that heavy sombich with a 3lb, 2'-long scope. As far as elk, a pound or two while humping mountains means a lot. And o the .270 hater - a .270 will kill anything, son. Maybe you can't shoot for shite???

It will take anything in North America with the right bullet selection.

Who argued that point? Son.

A Sako 85 Classic is hardly a tactical bull barrel rifle. The OP claimed it to be a safe queen, and an heirloom. The gun itself won't be lugged around and abused.

When thinking of something that I would like to have that's "special" that is that expensive it would be different than a .270

Maybe you can't read for shite, son.

I know I'd have little to no use for it, but I'd have to get something in .375 H&H for an heirloom. frick I love that caliber. I wish I had some big delicious shite around here to use it on.

Yea, a finnlight is a FARRRRRR nicer rifle than any model 700 off the production line.

I have a T3 stainless/synthetic in .30-06 which weighs about as much as a popcorn fart. It's the pinnacle of practicality IMO. It shoots extremely well, its light, it's weatherproof, it's cheap enough to not worry about dings. I still catch myself wanting a nice wood/blued rifle that I could give to my kids with a few war marks in it.

It's not even close. New Remington guns are arse. Even the pre-freedom group ones couldn't touch a Sako in terms of quality.

I'm glad I'm not your kid/grandkid that may be the last caliber I want in a rifle.

The recoil really isn't too terrible. I would love to own one.

I'm not recoil sensitive, there's not a whole lot of animals I care to hunt that require a round that size.

I'd shoot a deer with it just because I had it

There is good bullet selection that wont damage meat at all so long as you big bones. But yeah, for most applications you may be better served with something else when factoring in cost and recoil.

I've seen a few brand new Remington's and I don't find them to be bad at all. They had a shitty transition but it looks to me like the quality is back up. It ain't no Sako, but none of them were fuzzy rusted pieces of shite like the mid-transition guns were.

I want to shoot a deer with a .338 Lapua at 700 yards too, but not every weekend. I just think about some of the older calibers that don't get much love today when I think about a classic hand me down deer rifle .25-06 or a .280 fits that bill for me. That 6.5 Swede would be awesome too but thats even harder to find.

I'm wanting a ruger guide gun in .30-06 with a Leupold 2-8x36 vx3 in an extremely bad way. The farthest I've ever launched lead at a deer in my life was a little over 200 yards and I've killed a pile. I don't have any confidence beyond that shooting out of a janky deer stand anyway. I'm contemplating selling my tikka next year for a ruger.
