Some of the old people never went in the woods without buckshot regardless of what they were doing. Just in case big boy decided to sneak by.

We hunted on an oldddd farmers land which had thousands of acres of crops would shoot them with a 22-250 in the gut all year round so they would run off and die in the woods. Said he had a permit for it...

I'm not a fan of the head shot, its a personal matter for me. I feel like at the minimum I owe the deer a shot that preserves their dignity. Busting their head like a watermelon just doesn't do that for me. I'll shoot the vitals or neck. In addition, I've trailed deer with their jaws and face blown off. Not fun...

I came up on deer vehicle wreck once and the state trooper asked me if I had a rifle in my truck to finish off the deer which had a broken back. I was young at the time and thought you had to have a cannon to hunt deer so I preceded to get out of my truck and shoot the deer in the head at close range with a .300 win mag . It blew brains and pieces of skull all over the state trooper. It is a thousand wonders the pieces of bone did not injury him or me.

I popped a nice doe a few years ago in the head. She was only 40 yards away though. I haven't taken a head shot since. I won't do it if she is more than 50 yards away. I don't want take the chance I'll maim her.

found out that I needed glasses after shooting a deer in the head. I walked up to a food plot and saw a deer about 60 yards off in the woods and it was in the brush and I thought it was a doe so i shot it in the head, walked up to it and it was an 8 pointer with about a 13" spread. the next monday I went for an eye exam and i now wear glasses.

I've done it, but just because of the novelty of it. Its really a stupid shot. If you think a head shot deer won't leave you're wrong. Best stand on our club is the "jaw breaker" because of it. Found teeth and jaw bone. No deer

If you don't like shooting the head but want to keep the meat in good shape, go for a good neck shot. Just shoot near the spine and it'll drop where it stands.
Very true.
In my previous post when I referred to the neck shot, one's actually aiming for the spine. I've not felt comfortable enough w/ the neck shot to use it. OTOH, I have shot a number of deer in the chest part of the spine. You're right that a spine shot deer will drop immediately. One warning though on something that's happened twice to me w/ high lung/spine shots. It's possible for a high lung/spine shot to miss both the spine and the lungs by hitting below the spine and above the lungs. This shot will shock the spine and immediately put the deer down, but only temporarily, and without killing it. If you think you've hit the spine on an attempted high lung shot, rechamber a round and be prepared to immediately shoot again if the deer starts to get up to it's feet.

I shoot does in the neck in food plots. Its either been clean kills or complete misses in my experience.

why would you not just put the deer down?

I've only done it once, but this was a "no way I could miss" deal.
I shot a doe in the head, and her nose was literally 5 inches from the first step on my ladder stand. she standing in the actual trail that I used to walk to the stand, bent down, eating grass just off the trail. So the shot was literally about a 15 foot shot.

When you shoot em in the head they will flop around a lot sometimes. They are dead as a hammer and damn sure not aware as their brains are hanging in the bushes.
