Arrived on the island this afternoon and after unpacking took my wife and daughter to the beach for some relaxation. When we got out of the car a man from the camp next to where we parked came and asked us to please be careful in the water. His sister in law drowned this morning right where we were enjoying the beach.

I didn't catch his name or his SIL name but please keep the family in your prayers. God knows who they are.

Yes it's at the rocks. Seems every year someone loses their life on the beach down here.

I'll be down next weekend so I'm curious if someone doesn't mind elaborating. Are we talking undertow/rip currents? Will kayak fish and maybe wade so I'm curious

Yeah someone drowned there a few weeks ago too. It's across from where Cisco's back bar is I think. We stayed at "Fi-Fi" right there a couple weeks ago. Undertow was Skrong af on each side of the jetties.

He referenced the undertow, but idk how we would ever know for certain what happened. I can tell you that the water was very rough on the beach.

So his sister in law died this morning and he's still hanging out at the camp?

Yeah, weird situation if they guy is just casual telling you "yeah my sister in law drowned this morning". But the undertow is very bad right now. I was down for Memorial day weekend and the gaps between the rocks is terrible. I am not sure if it has something to do with all the water being sucked into a small area or what.

Leaving wouldn't bring her back alive. Besides, I know some folks that would be celebrating the death of an inlaw

My dad drowned on the beach about 20 years ago. Best swimmer in the family. Drowned saving my nephew his grandson. He never was in water deeper than 6 ft. Strong undertow kept him in one place and waves overpowered him. I fished with him that morning before I left. I have gone back a few times and find comfort there. He was a good man.

Wow condolences

My dad used to take us to GI state park when i was a kid in 70s 80s
Until they closed half the park because they were having 2 and 3 drownings every year. My dad saved two women who got swept around the jetty. Never forget that day. Dad was pissed cuz he lost his fishing pole in the process.

The family and I were on the beach for about an hour and when we returned to our car they were gone from the camp. I'm sure they had to pack their stuff before they left.

I was there a few years ago at the State Park when a latino gentleman in a church group from the Gonzales area perished trying to save the life of one of his family members.

Me and my son were behind the rocks fishing crabs on a palon. At about noon the tide switched like a light switch and you could feel the current just start ripping. I brought my son to the beach and went to pick up my palon to get the hell out of there when I heard all kind of commotion from the Latino guys fishing off the rocks. That's when the fella drowned. He did save his family member from drowning. More often than not that's the way it happens. Don't mess with the current fellas and for damn sure don't fight it.
