Fixing to start making my own.
I'm open for up to $150 for the blanks, not opposed to spending less.
Who makes the most consistent? speaking just the blank

I have a buddy that got into rod building and I have a few he built for me. It seems he mostly likes to use MHX and Castaway.

A friend who lives in Los Angeles and often fishes for yellowtail decided he would build a custom rod. He enjoys detailed processes and he is meticulous in his work. To get to the quick, he did it, produced a beautiful rod, and says it functions as he expected. He sent pics that I had deleted so I can’t share here. BRB, etc......

I've built a bunch of fishing rods, but it's been a long time since I've done it.
My favorite blanks were St Croix at the time.

I forget who, but someone posts here who’s extremely knowledgeable on the topic. Keep it on the front page for a day or two and they’ll probably chime in. They used St Croix but had other recs as well.

I've only done a few fly rods but I've been very impressed with a couple of pacific bay blanks that i have used

I've recently started and it's a blast. What are you building them for? That's pretty important.

not me but i got into it for a while. used defected blanks on most. caught many AJs on them with no problems. The cheap guides is where i should have spent more.

You have some pretty solid wrapping skills

I just looked it up and am seeing that St Croix no longer sells blanks.
If you go to Mudhole.com you will be able to find all your components.
The blanks they sell that I'm somewhat familiar with are Lamiglass and and TFO.
I've heard that Pacific Bay blanks are good but have no experience with them.

yea that was the fun part. i got to where i could control i think 8 strands at once. did it all by hand too so it took forever. then i watch the pros with the pedal turner and see them wrap 8 inchs in 5 seconds.

Don't spend much on your first blank. Consider it a practice experience that will look like shite, but you will learn a lot building it.

I got a buddy here in Washington whose family builds a national brand of rods and he says there ain't a lot of difference in blanks. Apparently all manufactures make blanks that they either market as their brand or sell to others who do the same...I think he told me there weren't but 4 or 5 manufactures of blanks in the world and they simply rebrand them.

I’ll probably buy the Mudhole turnkey rod kit. You get the rod building starter kit and parts to make a rod for like an extra $50. It’s a middle ground MHX blank. They make some pretty good higher end stuff too if you go by the specs
I looked at the Phenix, the K2 shafts are cheese. What other series they have with close to that rep for quality. Point Blank looks interesting also
The ones I build for me will all be bass rods with maybe a little speck/ red side action. Just tired of inconsistent feeling rods but after doing research I think it’s more due to box rods not being spined right when built and not the blanks themselves so much. I checked all my bass rods and only one is close to being on spine.

Not the exact same subject but maybe someone can help. I have 4 TFO gts rods that all have at least one broken guid. The edge split and the ceramic donut part came off. Can I have the guide replaced for a reasonable amount?
I called TFO and they said I could cut the section with the model numbers and send them just that for a replacement. They would charge $50ea and it would be what ever is the closest from what they sell now. They don’t sell what I have and I have no idea what they would send.
Any of yall in lafayette that can replace guides?

I just started building myself. I used the MHX L843 for my first build, and I am happy with the end result. About to start my next rod and will try Rodgeeks.com blanks. They are partnered with St. Croix and sell their blanks. Their Carbon 2 blanks are the same as the St croix SCII, so it should be a setup from the MHX. Also offer them painted in 34 different colors.

I build all of my rods and have built several for friends. I've been using the MHX blanks and am very happy with them and the results. I have no desire to build anything fancy from a looks standpoint. I'm really just focused on performance and quality.

Don't forget to lay your eyes out along the spline.

MHX or Rainshadow.
Sometimes Mudhole has blem blanks on sale.
They are not bad to just get the hang of building a rod.
