Sorry, thought it was you that said
quote:then went on to say how they wouldn't work if damaged or dull.
Even though they work well there's the potential there for something to fail and them not deploy
My point was, it makes no sense for anyone to form an opinion of a broadhead based on how said broadhead performs when damaged or dull.

Is there any reason for me to use mechanicals over fixed broadheads if I won't take a shot outside of 40 yds?
Posted on 8/6/12 at 12:14 pm to Boats n Hose
One reason I started using them was because I could take field points out and screw in my Rage and still shot same all the way to my 60 yard pin and I could remember Hearing my fixed blade fly and not hearing the mechanical

I may switch to them once I get confident in my shooting at further distances. But for now I'm good

For starters, if you are shooting something over 40 yards I hope it's an elk, buffalo, or something else with lungs the size of refridgerators. Over 40 is pushing it no matter if you have Rambo broadheads. Too many things can go wrong in between zero and 40.
Personally I believe if you are shooting a bow over 275 fps or so, the mechanicals (Specifically Rage) will out-perform the fixed in all areas I can think of.
#1-Penetration: In the first days of mechanicals (think Vortex) the idea of incorporating a cut-on-contact concept into the mechanical head was lost. Therefore many of the first in the early 90s didn't penetrate as well as, say, a 125 gr Thunderhead. With the cut-on-contact incorporated into today's Rage and such, the penetration issue is virtually non-existent. Some manufacturers will make you believe their fixed blades will outperform mechanicals because they can shoot through 55-gallon drums and 1" plywood. I tried hunting barrels and plywood, and neither presented a challenge. I have, however, shot my 2 and 3-blade Rage through both shoulders of many deer without a hiccup.
Advantage - Push
#2-Arrow flight: Mechanical's fly awesome. Sure you can tune your setup to spit out your Muzzy's like a bullet, but the mechanicals fly better for the most part.
Advantage - Mechanicals
#3-Damage inflicted: Poke yourself in the stomack with a needle, then do the same with a scalpel or something else with a larger cutting area. Big wounds result in better blood trails and higher rate of recovery on average. On good shots it wouldn't matter if you were shooting a field tip or 3" cutting broadhead. The marginal to bad shots is where the mechanicals prevail.
Advantage - Mechanical
#4-Value: Sure a 3-pack of Rage is $40.00, but what is the cost of your wasted effort on the one deer you lose that you would have found with a better blood trail or better arrow flight?
Advantage - Mechanical?
Hope this helps answer your question.

Great post I had one waiting in a box at the office I bought off Amazon for kicks last week. I really was planning to shoot pesky people and pesky squirrels with mine. Teach those mfers to eat my damn bird seed. (LOL) but my buddies told me you can hunt with Crossbows ib Bama without a doctors note saying you are ill, disbled, just a general pussy, etc. Damn this is easy to shoot this things. My 9 year old could do it.
Then we found this old deer trail along our new camp with a few ancient bows stands in it that hasnet been hunted for decades and WTF I might have to go to the Dark side here boys.
If I shoot a few meth attics will that even it out? Or If I do this will it be baited fields and spot lighting next? I would rather bow hunt but not sure I have time to practice enough to get up to speed, and man this little bastard is easy and accurate as hell.
Must resist....but soooooo easy.......

What do you sharpen with/how do you sharpen? Do you get them back to fresh-out-the-box sharp?

I get them sharper...
My wifes father gave one to me for christmas. I dont know what the hell its called, but it has a mini vice that holds the broadhead in place. It then has two ceramic rods that are attatched to a ball joint object, and you can hit both sides of each blade with it.
Its like rowing a boat with two ceramic rods, and the blade is your water.
screwed thepooch on that one. i am my wife's husband.
More edits because upon further review, it looked like i got a 12 year old girl to describe the sharpener.
