anyone ever done this? one of our old units needed a new diesle tank (we thought it had rusted out but come to find out that wasnt the case). the fab work is no problem but my question is what can i do to clean out the inside in order to get everything out before i eat anything from it.

I would start with Simple Green than Dawn.

Cut open the tank and sandblast the inside and out. Paint the outside and start smoking.

All of the suggestions concerning cleaning with detergent and burning the interior with wood are good ideas. Most importantly make sure that you flush the tank with plenty of water and use a saber saw to perform the initial cuts. A small amount of residual fuel can cause a big fire or explosion.

even with diesel? i was under the impression that diesel needs to be highly heated and very compressed to cause a combustion.

The vapors can still ignite.
My comment was under the assumption the tank would be cleaned out with detergents first.
