It sounds like 2 or 3 howling. When they stopped, a 3rd for sure howled back which was about a tenth of a mile from me.

To the poster regarding the distance, they are about 150 feet from my house not 150 yards. I have 6 acres however, my property butts up to a subdivision on one side.

Coyotes aren't going to bother you or your child. A lot more things to worry about with your child than a coyote. But yes, don't let your 2 year old child outside alone for every possible reason.

Don't put poison out at random. Not only will it kill indiscriminately, it could land you in jail if you kill the wrong animal.

If a coyote comes by me on the stand, he will get shot, but other than that I love to hear them yip and yelp at night. Very few natural predators left, they are filling a niche that man created.

As for the rest of the posters, I didn't realize coyotes had risen to #2 on the list of scary animals behind hogs.

This first sentence has me so confused. So your hearing 150 yotes at 4 am?

Sorry I corrected. It is about 150 ft.

get some 4/0 or 5/0 circle hooks a put meat scraps on them. let them hang from stout branches about 3-4' off the ground from some wire leader. wake up early the next morning before the neighbors see and go get some batting practice. cheap and effective.

ps: i HATE 'yotes and don't give two craps about being humane with them.

If you catch a dog or other unintended animal with a trap or poison

Buck, The Coyote-Stomping Donkey

quote:

“By the time I got over there, Buck was stomping the coyote. Then he reached down and picked him up by the neck and started slinging him like a rag doll. I grabbed my phone and got two pictures.”

The female coyote learned a hard lesson... don’t mess with Buck.

This X 1000. all these suggestions on ways to kill the yotes ,while arguably effective, carry huge liability- civil and criminal. Think carefully before you do any of these.

Donkeys will curb stomp some coyotes. The problem is that they will also curb stomp your neighbor's dog if he walks across the property line.

We had an unconfirmed attack (or accosting) in Cenla a few months back.

In any event, I wouldn't be terribly worried about 1 or 2 yotes jumping an adult, but a child would most definitely be at risk, at night to a group of 3 or more - for sure - and perhaps even to 1 or 2 as a target of opportunity.

Who leaves their child outside at night by themselves?

Was at a party a couple of years ago... Outside by the pool. About 20 people around, music playing, etc.

The home owner's two little Pekinese dogs were out with the group. All of a sudden, something runs through the yard, dodges a few people and snatches up one of the little yappy dust mops with feet. It starts yelping; a lady starts screaming, and we all started chasing it as it ran back into the woods. It got away.

TL;DR coyotes will snatch furry little dogs named HillaryClinton even when people are around.

(Still don't agree with the hooks and baseball bat thing though - that's some Jeffery dahlmer as a child shite)

Get you a 17wsm. Savage b mag is the model. A primos hot dog coyote howl call. And a green light that mounts to your gun. A laser genetics nd3 will do the job. That set up will take care of the problem. Unless you can't shoot worth a shite.

Yeah, the guy wasn't really upset, but his wife was very much so.

Funny part of the story -- before they got the yappy things, the wife says, "I want to get two dogs. "What kind?" Her: "Pekingese." Dude says, no way. She says, "well I already told them that I want them." He says, "fine, if I have to live with them, I'm gonna name 'em." She agreed.

He named one HillaryClinton and the other Oprah. He says, "If I've gotta live with two annoying bitches, I might as well name 'em right."
