I've killed my share of ducks this season in warm weather. I took off this week to hunt but haven't due to fog.isnt worth the risk on the river. I'm headed to Arkansas today to get my two days in it will be worth it, they been smoking em!

wait... hunt after fog...

one of my son's friends went up to Ark.. sent a pic back sat am bragging..... was quickly rebutted by a better pic.. just sayin'....

in the 3 places I regularly hunt this is now officially the best season I can recall.

exception - old family property in welsh is a dead zone for some reason.. but it has been for a few years now.

You and a few others are an exception. For those of us who don't have prime time spots that hold a bunch of birds on a normal winter day, this weather sure is a son of a bitch and doesn't give us much hope. Sure it doesn't matter if you already have birds around but it makes tough hunting even tougher.

I've been fortunate to have amazing hunts, I'm not risking my life in fog in a boat just ain't happening. I've killed my fair share so this arkansas trip will be nice and I may make a few more hunts but I've had a great season.

one of our "main" spots is far far from prime - in fact..some would say it sucks... we just keep our mouths shut...and don't brag at the landing...although we shoot less than all of our counter parts.. we take home more.. but if you hunted with me or son you would see what we mean by that - we don't waste many shells.

we unlike some in our same lease - busted our asses keeping salvinia at bay....

the ducks are in LA the midwest got the weather needed to get them here...

pogey.. I will come with you to your lease as soon as the season is over.. I promise you I can help you attract and keep ducks...

if you are willing to do a little work.

Yeah you've done well. I'm headed to north in a few hours and it will likely be my last hunts of the year.

I gotcha. My point being some people really have had a bad season and this weather doesn't necessarily hurt them, but at the same time it definitely doesn't help.

ETA: I'm working 7 days a week at the moment but if that offer still stands in a couple weeks I'll do my best to try to take you up on that

Pouring out a few bags of corn doesn't seem like that much work to me...

nope.. it does not... but post season "imprinting" to the ducks that are here in feb certainly does..... but there is indeed at method to it..

I hunt both public and private land, and this has been the best season I've had in recent memory. I'm going to echo a lot of what sushi said though. It doesn't come without work, both in season and off season.

True that.

Yeah but you have birds in your area. Some don't and this weather certainly doesn't help. You can put in all the work you want but at the end of the day it takes birds to kill birds. I at least have opportunity to move freely on some acreage but some people can't do that and no amount of work will change their success.

I would also suggest that if you're not killing ducks, don't stick to one tactic. Don't do the same thing over and over. Try hunting later in the day. With this fog, I think the earliest I've been setup over the last five hunts was like 7:45. Go out and make an all day sit one day and just see what the ducks are doing. If your lease doesn't have ducks, go hunt public land. The private land I hunt is decent at best, and sometimes there just aren't birds there. When they leave, I go hunt public.

Y'all been seeing a bunch of buffleheads over there the last few weeks? Buddy of mine shot like 18 of them in Biloxi marsh a couple weekends ago.

ETA: honestly though I've only had a few days off work since October so I just have to do what I can without being able to scout the previous day or really be able to set up exactly how I want. I'm hoping I'll have a boat next year so I can do some traveling to more desired areas.

yeah....to some extent pogey.. highest duck count in LA since 99(my best season ever) weather may not make more ducks come here at this point.

monday after we finished our speck hunt, in abbeville we rode back roads west to klnodike up through lake arthur up through welsh east on back roads all the way to church point... I was shocked at how few ducks i saw in rice fields and crawfish... and very very few in sky.

and I was looking hard... that's not the weather - they are using other habitat.... one guy told me he has ducks..... at night...

but yes you need ducks in your area... that's a given...

when a field goes from moist soil crops or crp to cane or cattle..... it reduces an areas ability to hold ducks... period...

I told someone yesterday if I had their fields I would not plant rice where they hunt... i would let whatever grows grow.... then plow it up in late summer and flood....

he laughed at me.. said i didn't now what i was talking about... frick him....

I haven't seen any in the WMA, but I've seen a bunch this season elsewhere in the parish and in Plaquemines. I'd like to shoot a drake to mount, but other than that I leave em alone. I don't like to eat them.
