Any recommendations on a good CB or communication device to add in my truck for when power is out during storms etc? I am not looking for a HAM setup in the vehicle but some type of communications device. I know Cajun Navy used Zello App but that would require having your phone having to constantly be charged in truck or wherever. Mainly I want something to add to my M35 for future use if needed in rescue operations. I only had my cell phone to use in the Aug 16 floods in Youngsville.

Any amazon links are great as well.

Thank you

I'm not sure CB radios offer the utility anymore. I have some older CB handhelds that I'll occasionally powerup to see what they pick up, hardly get anything.

I've had this saved in my bookmarks to look at forever now.

Beartooth

Seems like a good idea and the device can charge your phone.

Your backup device really only works as long as the person you are trying to communicate with also has that device. If you were working with the Cajun Navy and they use Zello then you probably need to stick with Zello for that. As for having to keep your phone charged, any device is going to require power whether its wired into your truck or runs off battery. If you want to communicate with other people or emergency personnel from your truck in the event cell service is not available then I think your only viable options are sat phone or HAM radio.

Iridium is pretty standard amongst government agencies and contractors. $$$ though, $1000 and up for the phone and if you have to use it will make your wallet cry again.

My two cents and it's really not worth that... sat phones suck. They have small windows where a call can be stable or reliable. I think a solar charger for a phone and zello would be where I would go.

agreed...while satellite phones do work, they are extremely limited in their practical usefulness.

Hand held CBs are generally shite. I'd say a 10 meter "export" with a good antenna, I.e. A 102" whip, would suffice for a few people to communicate. These exports have frequencies outside the 11m "CB" band that are quiet and not used usually. Of course you aren't supposed to have these radios or use those "free band" frequencies, but if shtf, wgaf. These radios would also limit you being in or near a vehicle.

Other alt would be VHF or UHF handheld or mobile units on a repeater system. If, the repeater is reliable during power outages. If no repeater, Then higher power would be needed. I know some dudes with 100watt VHF and the used to talk 20 miles truck to truck pretty easily and reliably.

The little FMRS/ GRS radios will reach 3-4 miles in rural environs, urban probably a few blocks.

At the hospital where I worked during Katrina, Sat phones were about useless. Very hard to find a spot where they would work. HAMs are what saved us.
