I copied this release below from the Central FB page. Been a huge battle between landowners and ATV enthusiasts. I just wanted to post the topic for discussion. I have a no dog in the hunt...........looks like DWF are writing tickets now:

New rules prohibit motorized vehicles in the Comite River. Law Enforcement issuing tickets:

The new rules prohibit the use of a motor vehicle or other wheeled or tracked vehicle on a designated system stream, except for permitted uses and direct crossings by immediately adjacent landowners, lessees, and persons who have written permission from the landowner for non-commercial activities that do not significantly degrade the ecological integrity of the stream.

On May 21, LDWF agents cited a 17-year-old Zachary man for violating the scenic river rules when he was found operating a Jeep in the Comite River south of Zachary near Dyer Rd, the releases states.

And on May 24, agents issued 17 citations to 17 subjects from Zachary, Slaughter, Baton Rouge, Baker, Clinton and Greenwell Springs for violating the scenic river rules when they were found riding ATVs in the Comite River south of Zachary off of Tucker Rd.

Violators of the scenic river rules face up to $950 in fines and up to 120 days in jail, according to the release.

I guess they were trying to prevent what happened on the Pushepatapa

from what i understand the bad actions of a handfull of people are what brought this on for the comite

Completely support this, but I have a fighting interest. I have family that live in this area and the ATVers are out of control. One of these dumbasses are going to get shot riding up on private property at 2am.

I think the same thing was happening on Thompson Creek St. Francisville a few years ago before they shut it down also..........are there any riders on this board? Would love to hear an argument from the other side.

It's not just Comite. From what I remember, it's about 25 various rivers around the state.

It's a shame that it's come to this. People are just too damn disrespectful of other peoples property. I don't blame the landowners, who wants to have a bunch of drunk assholes trespassing and littering on their property while blaring their shitty music.

I wouldn't imagine too many landowners would really have a problem with people enjoying the creeks in a respectful manner. But now that the government is involved, I doubt it will ever go back.

I used to ride the homochitto near our camp in MS. Hunting club members starting warning members that DWF agents were writing tickets. Its a very remote area so I never saw any but I would imagine a populated area like the Comite would get the attention of the law very quick.

I get the reasoning but there's nothing like putting down the river with a ultra lite rod throwing a beetle spin in the deep holes.

I ride in 10 mile creek by my house here but its a hard limestone bottom. you can't even tell I am in there in my SxS other than my entrance point.

Its different that riding in LA scenic rivers and the atvs disrupt the ecosystem more. I read an article a while back on the results from too much riding in these rivers. may have been posted here.

Glad they are finally cracking down. They were tearing up the river and leaving a mess. A good friend of mine owns land that fronts the Comite and has been very involved in all this. He didn't have an issue with riding but all that came with it. They were carrying on all hours of the night and he found a 15-16 yr old girl in a swimsuit walking down tucker rd,obviously high at 3 in the morning. That didn't help their cause.

I am shocked someone has not been seriously injured or killed. I do understand that yougsters need somewhere to get away........we all did or went places to do so when we were that age.

I am all for banning 4-wheelers on the river even though I went there back in high school. We had permission from an adjacent landowner so we didn't trespass like some. The jacked-up, snorkel kit 4-wheeler and jeep crew took it to far with trespassing and just being drunk assholes.

I agree with this, what landowner would put up with this?

From what I have seen from where I ride, the ecosystem is not disturbed from riding. Granted, it's not Comite or Thompson Creek, so it doesn't get as much pressure.

My experience has been that every rain and subsequent flood does much more to change the creek than any amount of riding does. After a moderate shower, you can't even tell people have ever ridden there.

Bringing ecosystem disturbance into the conversation was to get LDWF on board to strengthen their case to shut them down. The bottom line with these riders is that they are trespassing on people's land. The riders tried to use the navigable waterways argument to keep riding, but that didn't work

Ive been a part of the enforcement of no riding on Thompson Creek. There are other creeks and sandy bayous where this has been enforced but not to the extent mainly due to lack of property owner complaints requesting the enforcement.

I also was a creek junkie in my younger days and spent many hours riding Thompson Creek from Jackson La to Norwood.

A lot of factors involved on why it was shut down after being so common for so many years. One land owner stated that he purchased property due to its nice sandbar and access to the creek. He would enjoy having family picnics and kids playing there but when a group of 20 drunks on bikes come through it would ruin it. Not to mention finding camp sites 100 yards into his woods with fires still burning and trash scattered.

Another landowner took it upon himself to protect his property and would spend the weekend on the creek stopping riders coming down telling them they can not come onto his private property ( he owned the land on both sides of the creek). He was also armed and fired a warning shot in one instance after confronting 17 riders and the riders becoming aggressive.

I never did hear a reasonable argument against the enforcing of the law.

LDWF was never involved when we would set up on the creeks. Just local enforcement and ATC checking for underage drinking.
