I am in Southeast Georgia and have found a branch that I've been fishing lately...we have caught flatheads, bream, bass, gar, and lots of these Choupique or bowfin as some call them...well we have been catching a lot of them...I recently caught a male (it had the color in the tail and was more slender) and that damn fish stunk so bad...anybody know why it would stink like that?

Keep it alive until the grease is hot, bop it between the eyes with a ballpeen, filet, badder, fry, enjoy.

Never smelled a stinky one.

It's as hard as cleaning a big speck.

I'll respectfully suggest cleaning and eating the catfish, bream, bass, and especially any sac-a-lait (also referred to as sac-au-lait by the misinformed) you catch.

The gar and choupique should be dispatched with the butt end of a pool cue and tossed on the bank as nutritional opportunities for raccoons, snakes and buzzards.

My grandfather inlaw will lose his freakin mind if you throw a choupic or goo back. He actually dug a pond on his property to specifically stock choupic

A bowfin and choupique are the same thing but a snakehead is different?

Am I getting this right? I always thought it was 3 names for the same fish

goo

My dads friend said he caught one and didn't know what it was so they cooked it and he said it was good. A couple of trips later he caught another one so they tried to cook it. He said it smelled so bad he told his wife to throw it out!

gaspergou is just a freshwater drum
a little bony but good white meat

choupique is a different story, not good for anything but grinding and making balls and even then not very good, certainly not worth the trouble unless you literally have nothing else to eat

Grinnel. Hit it in the head with a hammer next time and throw that nasty fricker back in the water.

Choupique:
1. Filet it while fresh, make sure to cut out any bloodlines.
2. Rinse well, making sure no scales/slime are left on meat
3. Heat skillet on medium high to about 350° and add butter
4. Brown filet on each side for 1 min
5. Feed choupique to dog
6. Order a pizza

Not fair to the creature and not good for your soul.

Do things the right and fair way. Kill the creature quickly and mercifully before you clean it.

Do the right thing and club it to death on the side of the boat and get your bait back and let the alligators have it.

If you put a choupique in my boat, you and the nasty arse prehistoric looking stink ball are going overboard together.
