Anyone know ballpark pricing to have an Abolt cerakoted? It is matte black, but has developed surface rust over the past decade, and I can't get the finish back to look good after removing the factory finish.

Wondering if a cerakote job would be a viable option to get it looking good again. Don't want anything fancy just matte black.

Look up Black T by Birdsong in Jackson Ms.
I had my dads old Model 700 done and it's beautiful. It was less than 200 and they do the entire weapon. It looks brand new.

You've taken it down into the white already? Have you considered cold rust bluing? I just did it on a muzzleloader. Really easy to do if you are the least bit handy. I used Laurel Mountain Forge browning solution.

https://www.laurelmountainforge.com/barrel_brown_inst.htm

You clean the barrel off and degrease it and wipe the solution on there just barely enough to set the surface. You leave it someplace humid for several hours. I ran the shower and filled the bottom of the tub with hot water. After several hours take it and boil in distilled water than card with old cut up blue jeans. You repeat these steps until you get the color you want. The work is easy. The wait is the hard part. The wait and getting something long enough to boil your barrel. I used a piece of rain gutter and siliconed a couple of end caps on them. Go to Lowes/Home Depot they always have damaged sections of rain gutter. Full price they are only $7-8. I asked for a discount on a damaged one and got one for $2. The end caps were $2 each.

It will start out splotchy and ugly.

My boiling setup.

After rounds of wiping on browning solution. Waiting 4-6 hours. Boiling. And carding. Took a day and a half. About 30 minutes of work for each "pass".

Halleburton,
If you have a little DIY streak in you, I'd suggest consider doing a paint job on your gun w/ Aluma-Hyde II, a Cerakote type product sold by [link=(www.brownells.com)]Brownell's[/link]. I've painted a couple different guns w/ Aluma-Hyde II. It's a rattle can paint. It costs only $15/can. The action, barrel and most of the stock of this XP-100 was painted w/ Drab Green 3 seasons ago and has held up well. I did touch up a few spots this fall.

The action, bolt handle, barrel and stock background of this XP were painted w/ Aluma-Hyde II ?matte black.

If you decide to try the Aluma-Hyde II, let me know and I'll be glad to share some tips.

DH77,
Brownell's has some good videos on Youtube.
-Properly preparing the surface is very important. After being painted, the surface will naturally cure to a hard finish if left alone in sun.
-I usually end up doing my projects during the winter when there's little/no sun. I found a bunch of references on the 'net of folks curing the painted surface in their oven (?350 deg) overnight. After that I hang it in a small room (for a couple weeks) heated by an electric heater so the room's pretty warm. This may be a little overkill, but it's worked well for me.
-My handguns actions/barrels fit well in a typical oven. I hang the object in the oven by wire attached to a non-painted area. Once it's dried well enough to handle w/o smudging the paint, I then paint the areas where it was hanging by wire.
-Don't handle the unpainted/painted surface w/ bare hands. I wear rubber gloves to avoid getting oil on the surface.
-Buy the extra nozzles and clean out nozzles on Brownell's site. The paint is THICK and easily clogs the nozzles bad, leading to clumps of paint on your gun and/or a wasted can.
-Apply multiple, LIGHT coats of paint. This stuff is THICK.
-One can covers action/barrel of multiple XP's.
Good luck and share some pics w/ us.

-If I'm painting during cold weather, I warm up the can a little w/ a hair blower.

I have had 7 guns( rifles and shotguns) cerakoted and or a combination of cerakote and dip. I tried a couple at different local places in SWLA and SELA they did OK work that at the time I thought was great until I sent my third gun off to Roberts Custom Gun Works in Batesville Ar. He has since done 4 more of my guns. There is no comparison anywhere to his work and he warranties it for one year. His work is just more complete. His attention to detail is uncanny. He will video your completed product up close from all sides and angles as well as it firing after completion. You review the video and critic before he ever sends it back to you so he can fix anything you don't like about it. If you get it and find an issue he will fix at no extra cost. He is also one hell of a gun smith and on one occasion after breaking my gun down for cleaning he found two parts that were worn pretty good and sent me pics and a phone call to explain and replaced them at a really reasonable rate because the gun was already disassembled for other work. I highly recommend him. about a 2 to 3 week turnaround

Best around but pricey. I had my SBE II combo'ed dip/cerakote, Forcing cone lengthened, trigger worked, and a set of chokes (T1, T2, and T3).

I also had cone work and purchased the T2 after he pattern tested one of my guns. I have never had better work and customer service than those guys. And yes about 25% higher pricing than average.

I redid my A-Bolt a few weeks ago after it had developed rust also.

I used duracoat aerosol, which has a "can within a can" design so you can release the hardener into the paint, shake up and spray on as if it were krylon.

here is the result

Did you completely disassemble it?

Thanks for advice guys, looking into a few shops now. If it lasts like it is supposed to, should be well worth the money.

yes I disassembled it and put it in my blast cabinet.

I have used cerakote many times before and while it is an extremely high quality of product, it is very tedious to work with. this duracoat aerosol is pretty impressive and is very easy to use. I was just throwing it out there in the case you weren't opposed to doing it yourself.

ill look into it. was wanting to coat some 4 wheeler racks and bars and things around the house. Either cerakote/durakote or get me a powder coat setup. they seem to be getting cheaper and user friendly.

Very interested in the Rob Roberts deal also.

My old Beretta is in due of a facelift and a tune up. That computer patterning deal sounds awesome.

base is foliage green and olive drab, then sponged on olive drab, foliage, and then sparsely mixed in a little flat dark earth

the barrel and bolt are the foliage to give you color reference. I just sponged the foliage on the olive base and the olive on foliage base, and then dabbed the FDE througout
